Position Description

The Assistant Sports Dietitian is responsible for delivering evidence-based nutrition services for assigned teams and individual student-athletes. Working collaboratively with sports medicine staff, strength coaches, coaches and other support staff, the Assistant Sports Dietitian supports health, wellness, and performance through education, medical nutrition therapy, food service and performance nutrition strategies.

Major/Essential Functions


  • Assist in providing comprehensive nutrition services to assigned team/student-athletes.
  • Oversee fueling station operations, including but not limited to managing fueling station inventory, purchasing, systems, and product display/distribution.
  • Develop educational handouts, multi-media content, and group education to promote health, wellness, and performance nutrition habits. Plan and execute enrichment activities such as featured products at fueling stations, cooking demos, and grocery store tours.
  • Manage fueling station student assistants, including hiring and onboarding, scheduling, supervising, and mentoring. Assist in serving as a preceptor for Texas Tech University Dietetic Internship.
  • Assist in providing nutrition support for training and competition fueling, including but not limited to practice fueling/hydration, meal management, and gameday nutrition operations.
  • Assist with specific nutrition team meals, including menu development, collaboration with sport staff, and presence/plate coaching as able.
  • Perform body composition assessment and analysis for student-athletes and provide 1:1 counseling as appropriate.
  • Maintain budget tracking and communication with the Assistant Athletics Director of Sports Nutrition, and other administrative tasks as assigned.
  • Assist with recruit talks as appropriate for sport and within sports nutrition departmental abilities.
  • Maintain open, on-going communication with Assistant Athletics Director of Sports Nutrition, sports nutrition staff, sport coaches, strength staff, sports medicine staff, and team physicians.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Athletics Director of Sports Nutrition.
  • Comply with all NCAA, Big 12, and Texas Tech University rules, regulations, and policies.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or a related field. Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN), or RD-eligible within six months of hire. Will be expected to obtain a Texas dietitian license (LD).

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's degree. One or more years of experience in sports nutrition or a related field.

  • Ability to work a flexible, non-standard schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Ability to lift, push, or move up to 40 pounds.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
