Job Summary

The Vascular Surgery Inpatient Advanced Practice Provider (APP) provides direct patient care services and performs medical acts under the supervision of the supervisory physician to patients on the Vascular Surgery service, consulted vascular surgery patients at DRH. The APP performs physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies, radiologic and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, coordinates the care and discharge of patients, and provides direct care to the patients on the Vascular Surgery service. The Vascular Surgery APP contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and provides leadership to the organization.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Inpatient



  • Daily inpatient rounding on primary and consult teams
  • Assist with daily notes
  • Take first call on primary Vascular Surgery patients
  • Review and order diagnostic and lab studies
  • Patient and Family education
  • Provides continuity of care by working collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary teams
  • Staff new consults for Vascular Surgery at DRH
  • Assist with admissions
  • Perform discharges
  • Manage/Change/Apply wound vacs
  • Assist in maintaining and improving Quality Metrics
  • Provide collaborative and cost-effective care.



Job Eligibility Requirements

Education

NP: Graduate of an accredited MSN or DNP Nurse Practitioner program for adult care..

PA: Graduate of an ARC-accredited Physician Assistant program. Master's or Doctoral Degree Preferred.

Certification

NP: AGACNP or ACNP preferred, but will also consider FNP or AGNP with applicable experience.

PA: PA-C

Both: BLS required. ACLS is strongly recommended but not required

Licensure

NP: Current unrestricted RN licensure issued by or recognized by NCBON with authorization to practice as an NP

PA: Current unrestricted medical license issued by NCMB with authorization to practice as a PA

Both: Federal and State prescriptive authority

Experience

NP: 2+ years of RN experience in the clinical care of vascular or general surgery is strongly preferred.

1+ year NP experience preferred, ideally in vascular or general surgery capacity, but not required.

PA: 1+ year PA experience in the clinical care of trauma or general surgery strongly preferred, but not required.

Physical and mental requirements:



  • Able to clearly articulate the scope of practice and practices within those guidelines as an APP in the state of North Carolina and within the Duke University Health System.
  • Able to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively to solve complex problems
  • Able to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership, and others.
  • Able to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, perform health assessments, treatment, and follow-up.
  • Able to use fine motor skills
  • Able to record activities, document assessments & interventions; prepare reports and presentations;
  • Able to use a computer and learn new software programs
  • Able to provide leadership in the clinical area of expertise and in meeting organizational goals
  • Able to navigate the Hospital and DUHS to provide clinical expertise to specific patient populations
  • Able to withstand prolonged standing and walking, with the ability to move or lift at least fifty pounds
  • Able to remain focused and organized
  • Able to work collaboratively with all levels of personnel



Job Hours

The schedule will be 20 hours per week. This is a DAY shift role. The vascular APPs, will develop a schedule that is mutually amenable. Schedule may be changed by administrative or clinical leadership to meet department needs.
