Position Summary

The Engineer III, Insider Threat, is a senior technical role within the Cyber Defense organization responsible for detecting, investigating, and mitigating risks posed by malicious, negligent, or compromised insiders. This role serves as an escalation point for junior analysts and plays a critical part in developing monitoring strategies, conducting complex investigations, and supporting the global insider threat program. The Engineer III will work closely with Human Resources, Legal, Compliance, and Corporate Security to ensure that investigative activities are conducted lawfully, ethically, and in line with company policies.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct advanced investigations into potential insider threat activities, including data exfiltration, misuse of systems, fraud, and policy violations.

  • Analyze behavioral indicators, user activity logs, and technical telemetry to identify anomalous or high-risk actions.

  • Ensure evidence is collected, preserved, and documented in accordance with legal and regulatory standards.

  • Develop and refine insider threat detection use cases, playbooks, and monitoring processes.

  • Collaborate with HR, Legal, and Corporate Security on sensitive investigations to ensure coordinated and defensible outcomes.

  • Provide clear and concise reports of investigation findings to technical teams, management, and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Act as a technical escalation point for Engineer I/II insider threat analysts.

  • Mentor junior analysts on investigative methodologies, monitoring techniques, and insider threat best practices.

  • Participate in awareness and deterrence initiatives by contributing technical insights to training and education efforts.

  • Stay current on evolving insider threat tactics, behavioral analytics methodologies, and monitoring technologies.

Education and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Systems, Behavioral Science, Criminal Justice, or equivalent work experience; Master's degree preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of insider threat frameworks, behavioral analytics, and investigative methodologies.

  • Familiarity with privacy and compliance standards (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA, SOX, CCPA).

Preferred Certifications
  • Certified Insider Threat Program Manager (CITPM) or Certified Insider Threat Vulnerability Assessor (CITVA)

  • GIAC Cyber Threat Intelligence (GCTI)

  • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)

  • Other insider threat, behavioral analytics, or forensics certifications considered a plus

Work Experience
  • 5-7 years of progressive experience in cybersecurity, risk management, or investigations, with at least 3 years dedicated to insider threat detection or related areas.

  • Hands-on experience with insider threat monitoring platforms, behavioral analytics tools, and log analysis.

  • Demonstrated experience supporting HR/Legal/Corporate Security investigations.

  • Proven ability to handle sensitive, confidential investigations with discretion.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to brief stakeholders at multiple levels.
