Position Summary

Under the guidance and limited supervision of the Lead Network Engineer, this position is a dual role where the candidate will be responsible for supporting the Research Network and the Core Engineering Team in the configuration and maintenance of the UIC academic IP network. This position will work in a multidisciplinary collaborative environment as a member of the academic Network Core Team, as well as provide primary support to our Advanced Cyber Infrastructure for Education and Research (ACER) group. This candidate will participate in multi-vendor management, security, and network protocols for the research network environment and the academic network. The candidate must have knowledge of TCP/IP, large flows of data, DMZ, and have hands-on network experience with installation, configuration, monitoring, and maintenance of switches, firewalls, and routers in a research network environment.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Responsible for completion of daily tasks and project requests in a timely matter, as well as completing atypical assignments. Expected to participate in emergency service calls and network technical projects.
  • Implement, configure, support, and maintain campus ISP connections, WAN and LAN routers, firewalls, and switches on the academic network.
  • Monitor research network and academic network usage and system performance. Provides monthly reports to track network usage patterns, identify bottlenecks, propose reasonable solutions for our environment to deliver reliable large scale data transfers.
  • Provide support to various special network projects and end users. Act as the technical liaison for campus researchers with the ACER group supporting large scale data transfers both within UIC and with UIC collaborators around the world.
  • Update documentation, specifications, and network standards. Evaluate new and emerging technologies. Manage day-to-day duties including support clients on edge networks by completing timely service calls and implementing approved daily network changes to switches and routers.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
  1. Bachelor Degree within Computer Science or closely related field of study
  2. Minimum 5 years of professional IT experience within Infrastructure & Networking Engineering which includes demonstrated experience in planning, building/implementation of communication Networks (LAN/WAN/VPN) that support high performance voice, data, video and wireless network services
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of the OSI model.
  4. Demonstrated hands-on network experience in a large network environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Four years of work experience/training with network installation and support in campus or enterprise environment.
  • Experience with using network connectivity and performance diagnostic tools such as Solar Winds, perfSonar
  • Knowledge of underlying technologies around DMZ and SDN.
  • Complete project tasks in an effective and timely manner. Must react and function effectively in cases of critical network outages.
  • Willingness to learn cloud and HPC networking.
  • Excellent customer service skills and communications skills
