As the Sr. Director of Actuarial Services on the UHG Trend Analytics team supporting Optum Health, you'll play a pivotal role in delivering strategic analytics that shape how we understand, manage, and predict health care expenses across a diverse set of businesses, including Optum at Home (DSNP, ISNP, CSNP). You will lead a high-performing team responsible for producing mission-critical reports such as the Health Care Trend Analytics (HCTA) report and Medical Expense Reporting for executive stakeholders.

You'll have both autonomy and support to build analytics; your expertise will be counted on to ensure reporting is accurate, timely, actionable-and communicated with clarity to all audiences. In this highly visible leadership role, you'll foster an environment of continuous improvement while helping position Optum Health as an industry leader in medical cost management.

You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.

Primary Responsibilities:

The Sr. Director in this role will work with detailed health care claims data to build and maintain visually appealing, client-ready, and accurate actuarial models and deliverables.

  • Lead the development and delivery of advanced health care spend analytics for Optum Health-owning critical deliverables including the HCTA report
  • Oversee Medical Expense Reporting processes ensuring accuracy and timeliness; support executive decision-making through clear trend identification and actionable insights
  • Develop analytic frameworks from inception: identify relevant data sources; design models; validate results; automate processes where possible
  • Serve as an expert resource to business partners-including Forecasting teams-delivering robust projections of medical cost expense using actuarial best practices
  • Present complex analyses in a concise manner to executive audiences; translate technical findings into actionable business strategies
  • Provide subject matter expertise specific to Optum at Home programs (DSNP/ISNP/CSNP), tailoring analytics for these unique populations
  • Foster a team-oriented culture focused on innovation, professional growth, collaboration across functions (finance/operations/data), and continuous improvement
  • Maintain strong controls around quality assurance and data integrity in all analytic output
  • Mentor actuarial staff; champion development opportunities within your team

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics or related field
  • Credentialed Actuary (FSA or ASA)
  • 10+ years of experience in health care actuarial roles with progressive leadership responsibility-including managed care/payer environments
  • Demonstrated experience developing analytic solutions from scratch using large health care datasets
  • Experience supporting or analyzing Optum at Home populations: DSNP (Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan), ISNP (Institutional SNP), CSNP (Chronic Condition SNP).Bachelor's degree obtained from an accredited university
  • Proven track record delivering timely & accurate medical expense reporting & forecasting within fast-paced environments
  • Solid communication skills with demonstrated success presenting complex concepts clearly to cross-functional executive-level stakeholders
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Excel, and experience designing and running complex data programs, (e.g., extract and analyze data via R, SAS, SQL, Python, PowerBI, VBA, predictive modeling)
  • Analytic expertise to identify relevant and actionable study components

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in Healthcare Consulting
  • 5+ years of experience as a people and project manager including project management and business development
  • Experience leading high-performing teams within matrixed organizations or large payers/providers
  • Advanced proficiency with data analysis tools such as SAS/SQL/R/Python/Tableau/PowerBI plus Excel modeling techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to influence strategy through data-driven insights at senior levels
  • Preferred location: Eden Prairie, MN

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $156,400 to $268,000 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
