Overview Central Engineering's Asset Management Department is seeking an Engineer to support substation equipment specification, procurement, and maintenance. The role involves technical evaluations, design reviews, inspections, and field support for high- and medium-voltage equipment. Ideal candidates will have strong communication skills, a background in electrical or power systems, and experience with substation equipment procurement.
Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
- Prepare equipment and accessory purchase specifications; review and evaluates manufactures' proposals and drawings.
- Independently lead investigations and drive projects to completion with minimal supervision.
- Interface with equipment manufacturers, industry standards and R&D organizations. Perform vendor qualification activities and approves equipment suitable for our transmission and area substations
- Assist in preparation of operating, maintenance, and test procedures.
- Participate in preparation of budgets, appropriations, scoping documents, concept reviews, design field walks, cost reviews.
- Provide input for the development and update of equipment health indices and recommends planned equipment replacements
- Perform field evaluations of equipment and system issues, and prepare detailed failure analysis and technical reports.
- Prepare test procedures for equipment commissioning or post repair restoration.
- Be part of the Engineering Duty Roster. Duties involve providing 24hr support (reviewing and approving test results, responding to emergent issues) for a week, approximately 4 times annually.
- Perform other related tasks and assignments as required.
Qualifications
Required Education/Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and 3 years' of engineering work experience in the development and application of technical principles in substation equipment rating, application, specification, engineering, operation, and maintenance.
Relevant Work Experience
- Computer proficiency to include Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), required.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, required.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with personnel on all levels, required.
- Knowledge in basic engineering design and principles, required.
- Ability to write specifications and standards and coordinate engineering projects and assignments, preferred.
- Working knowledge of applicable codes and industry standards associated with the equipment, preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
- Driver's License Required
- Professional Engineer (PE) Preferred
Physical Demands
- Ability to respond to system emergencies
- Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
- Perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions
- Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
- Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
- Use personal vehicle(s), and be able to transport, store, and secure company laptops and other job-related equipment in vehicle. Acknowledge that reimbursement for use of personal vehicle is available through the company mileage procedure
Additional Physical Demands
- The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
- The positions involve working around electrical equipment, working indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, and ladder climbing.
- Ability to work in and around substations that are under construction and/or in service.
- Ability to work additional hours, as needed, for system emergencies or equipment outage schedules.
