What Your Job Will Be Like

Are you passionate about your work and eager to join a dynamic team that tackles challenging issues for national security? If so, we are looking for a highly motivated R&D Laboratory Support Technologist to be part of our Non-Destructive Environments and Diagnostics (1529) team. We are recognized leaders in developing and employing transformative non-destructive evaluation methods, specializing in capabilities such as radiography, computed tomography, ultrasound, eddy current, dye penetrant, and shearography. Our group balances laboratory and field testing with state-of-the-art equipment to support our mission.

In this role, you will play a pivotal part in advancing our radiography activities and radiation effects experiments. You will oversee the operational aspects, maintenance, and application of Sandias advanced radiography capabilities, including x-ray computed tomography systems, radiographic imaging, thermography, and x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. Your contributions will be essential in addressing critical questions that arise from our scientific and engineering mission activities. On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Conduct a wide array of experiments using various radiography techniques, including digital radiography, computed tomography, and high-speed field experiments.
  • Install, operate, and maintain laboratory equipment, including instrumentation and data acquisition systems.
  • Develop a deep understanding of laboratory equipment to recognize malfunctions and implement corrective actions.
  • Assist with various non-destructive testing techniques to support a diverse range of projects, including weapon systems and components throughout the stockpile lifecycle.
  • Conceptualize and communicate major elements of experimental design and results to staff, management, and visitors, representing the scientific and engineering principles being investigated.
  • Investigate anomalies and recommend alternative solutions to problems.
  • Write operating procedures, analysis methods, and laboratory protocols.
  • Support documentation and publication efforts, including documenting results for customers and contributing to conference proceedings and peer-reviewed journal papers.
  • Implement and adhere to rigorous work planning and control processes to ensure safe, secure, and high-quality operations and results.
  • Conceive and implement new solutions and improvements to the groups technical and operational procedures.

Join our team and achieve your goals while making a difference! Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite and be willing to work on nuclear deterrence systems.
