Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The role of the Environment, Health and Safety ( EHS) department is primarily environment, health and safety functions at the University. In support of the University's core mission, EHS will provide comprehensive environmental, health and safety services to the University community. This includes education through training and consultation, maintaining a safe environment through recognizing and controlling health and safety hazards, ensuring a process of regulatory compliance and minimizing future potential liabilities. By developing EHS programs and performing various periodic inspections we can provide a safe work place, ensure a process of compliance and minimize future potential liabilities. EHS is organized into eight (8) sections: Biological Safety, Environmental Affairs, Fire Safety & Emergency Response, Occupational & Environmental Hygiene, Chemical Safety, Radiation Safety, Workplace Safety and Business & Support.
Position Summary
This position serves as the Stormwater Specialist for the University's environmental inspection, permitting and regulatory compliance programs. The stormwater specialist works independently to identify and possibly solve complex environmental problems relating to surface water quality and stormwater permitting compliance. The stormwater specialist will plan, prepare, coordinate and facilitate implementation of UNC-CC's Phase II NPDES Stormwater Permit and perform on-going inspections and provide technical assistance for the erosion and sedimentation control practices used at all UNC-CH construction sites. The stormwater specialist will assist in implementing UNC-CH's stormwater management program, including surface water sampling and illicit discharge investigations plus associate date management and required reporting to environmental regulatory agencies.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Four year degree with a preference for a related major in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or closely related science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require specific certifications or licenses. Specific jobs will require additional minimum training and/or licensing upon selection.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Bachelor's degree in environmental or life science or a closely related field with at least eight hours of chemistry and three years of progressive environmental experience with implementing federal and state regulations for surface water quality protection or other related environmental programs.

Progressive experience in water resources and stormwater management preferred with experience in stormwater planning, design, and construction of storm water facilities with experience in project management or program administration and ability to effectively direct and guide teamwork effprt.

Training in GIS is desirable, as is a working knowledge of OSHA HazWoper regulations. Certification in Stormwater BMP Inspection & Maintenance and/or training in erosion and sediment control practices is also desirable.

Construction, public works, engineering design, or public utilities is also applicable.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Employee must be capable of walking in wooded and hilly natural terrains, climbing ladders and going into tight, confined spaces such as manholes.
