Salary: $72,735 -$83,000 Depending on experience and qualifications.

Position Summary:

Information Technology Services at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science invites applications for a full-time BI Developer & Report Writer. The BI Developer & Report Writer is an integral member of the Information Technology (IT) department, responsible for the technical development, infrastructure, data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) for institutional reports and enterprise dashboards. This role works in close collaboration with Institutional Effectiveness and Decision Support (IEDS) and Student Enrollment Management teams to translate business requirements into technical specifications, ensuring timely delivery and data accuracy of standardized reports. This position is critical in supporting the institution's data-driven decision-making processes by providing reliable and insightful reporting solutions that contribute to the university's mission and strategic goals, including the mentoring of junior report writers.

The Department of Information Technology Services (ITS) provides students, faculty, and staff with technology resources and support services that foster the mission, vision, and strategic plan of Rosalind Franklin University. ITS is responsible for the planning, management, and direction of technology initiatives in support of the academic and administrative operations at RFU. We are committed to developing and maintaining highly effective, reliable, secure information systems that support instructional, administrative and research functions.

ITS is composed of professional staff spread across multiple teams with a common set of skills and ambition, and a desire to collaborate both internally and externally with the RFU community.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Report Development:
    • Develop, design, and maintain BI dashboards and institutional reports using tools such as Power BI, SSRS, or similar platforms for various departments, including Admissions, Registrar, Financial Aid, HR, Finance, Sponsored Research, and Student Affairs, ensuring data integrity and user-friendliness.
    • Develop reports for academic departments as requested by IEDS.
    • Provide data extracts from supported systems to IEDS for accreditation, state, and federal reporting.
    • Automate recurring reports for operational and academic units as needed to improve efficiency and reduce manual effort.
    • Ensure technical accuracy of data and availability of reports and dashboards.
  • Technical Implementation:
    • Serve as a custodian of the technical reporting infrastructure and metadata repository, focusing on data types, lengths, formats, constraints, and physical locations, to ensure data quality and accessibility.
    • Translate business requirements received from IEDS and functional offices into clear and actionable technical specifications.
    • Perform ETL processes to load data into reporting systems and the data lake.
    • Proactively address impacts on reporting due to system upgrades, new modules, and backend integrations, with clear communication to stakeholders.
    • Troubleshoot data, system, and reporting issues, recommending and implementing corrective actions as needed.
  • Data Delivery:
    • Ensure the timely availability and secure distribution of standardized reports to operational, academic, and administrative units, with appropriate access controls.
    • Ensure data integrity, consistency, and security in all reporting and data management processes.
  • Collaboration and Support:
    • Partner with Institutional Effectiveness and Decision Support (IEDS) and Student Enrollment Management teams to develop standardized, validated data sets for institutional reporting.
    • Participate in the formal report request process, collaborating with IEDS from intake to development.
    • Mentor and guide junior report writers, including reviewing their work, providing technical and professional feedback, and supporting their continued development in BI tools and methodologies.
    • Establish and promote standards and best practices for report design, visualization, and data governance.
    • Participate in cross-functional project teams and contribute to continuous process improvement initiatives.

Required Education and Experience

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or a related field.
  • Experience:
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in report writing, data warehousing, and Business Intelligence (BI) dashboard development.
  • Proven expertise with Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) for report creation and management.
  • Strong proficiency in Power BI for dashboard development, data modeling, and visualization.
  • Experience with ETL processes and tools.
  • Familiarity with institutional data definitions and reporting standards in a higher education context to ensure compliance and accurate reporting.
  • Experience with data governance principles and practices.
  • Technical Skills:
  • Advanced SQL querying and scripting.
  • Proficiency in database systems and data warehousing concepts.
  • Experience designing dimensional models.
  • Familiarity with version control for reports and dashboards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Ellucian Colleague data structures.
  • Experience working in a Higher Education environment performing the duties shared above.
  • Experience with other BI tools and data visualization platforms is a plus.
