Job Summary

Involves the preparation, pickup, and delivery of incoming and outgoing domestic and international mail and packages for distribution, including sorting, classifying, weighing, calculating rates and recording recharge information, processing improperly addressed mail and answering mail related questions

Covered under University series concept / job specification for classification 4806. Under general supervision works on operational and / or moderately difficult procedural assignments requiring judgment in resolving issues. Makes recommendations to improve processes and / or procedures. As a lead member of the Mail Services team, handles customer inquiries and departmental relations while assisting with training of new staff members. Assists manager with distribution of work to Mail Processors. Re-assigns substitute mail carriers to cover routes during staffing shortages. Functions as only approved delegate responsible for employee check distributions.

Required Qualifications


  • Working knowledge of mail classes, services, and rates & regulations.
  • Knowledge of postage machine and scale.
  • Knowledge of national ZIP scheme.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, write, understand, and follow generalized and specific work instructions in English. Good customer service skills as demonstrated by the ability to positively and proactively respond and meet basic requests of internal and external clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform simple mathematical calculations.
  • Demonstrated oral communication skills as demonstrated by interacting tactfully and diplomatically with a diverse group of people.
  • Strong attention to detail as demonstrated by regularly verifying all work thoroughly to ensure accuracy of data, specifically on recharge codes, postal codes, and tracking numbers.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills as demonstrated by the ability to complete work and adhere to a fixed schedule throughout the work day.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely operate a panel van.
  • Basic computer skills, including experience with electronic mail, the Internet, UCOP directory, and training modules that may be delivered via computer.
  • Ability to make minor repairs to high speed automated mailing and labeling equipment.
  • Familiarity with CA DMV rules and regulations.
