Position Summary

The Clinic-Based Pharmacist for Dermatology will provide direct patient care within MaineHealth Dermatology-Portland, supporting high-quality, collaborative care through medication management, patient education, and interdisciplinary coordination. This role focuses on optimizing dermatologic therapies for patients with chronic skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, acne, hidradenitis suppurativa, and autoimmune dermatologic diseases. The pharmacist will work closely with dermatologists, nurses, care coordinators, and other team members to improve patient outcomes and support specialty medication access and adherence. The pharmacist will spend 2-3 days per week in clinic providing direct patient care, with remaining time dedicated to clinical tasks such as prior authorizations, patient follow-up, and medication monitoring.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Education: The Clinical Pharmacist role reviews medication orders for safe and effective medication use; collaborates with physicians and other health care personnel to achieve optimal patient outcomes; and formulates recommendations based on current literature and evidence-based practice.
  • License/Certifications: Current applicable state(s) license with Board of Pharmacy required.
  • Experience: Previous pharmacist experience preferred.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver comprehensive medication therapy management for dermatology, rheumatology patients, including those on biologics and other specialty medications.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary care and collaborate with providers to adjust therapy based on clinical guidelines and patient-specific factors.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on medication use, adherence strategies, and potential side effects.
  • Document clinical interventions and patient encounters using Compass Rose or similar platforms.
  • Support onboarding and training of new pharmacists as well as pharmacy students and residents.
  • Assist with medication access, prior authorizations, and appeals for dermatology-related therapies.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and data collection to support departmental goals.
  • Engage in professional development activities and committee work as appropriate.

Preferred Skills/Qualifications

  • Completion of PGY2 residency program in ambulatory care, or equivalent experience in specialty pharmacy.
  • Familiarity with dermatologic treatment guidelines and specialty medications (e.g., biologics, immunomodulators).
  • Experience with Epic, Compass Rose, or similar documentation systems.
  • Interest in teaching, mentoring, and contributing to professional development initiatives.
  • Interest in developing and maintaining a collaborative practice agreement with the dermatology clinic.
