2026 Summer Intern - Purification Development

Department Summary

At Genentech Technical Research & Development Gene Therapy, we commit to discovering, developing and delivering gene therapies, and we challenge the inevitability of genetic diseases, including hemophilia, ophthalmic disorders and neurodegenerative diseases, in ways unimaginable - until now. This internship position is located in Philadelphia, on-site.

The Opportunity

The purification downstream team is seeking a highly motivated and innovative undergraduate/master student for a 6-month intern/co-op position. The position will be primarily a lab-based role, responsible for developing robust and scalable purification processes to support early and late phase gene therapy products in our innovative pipeline projects.

  • Design and execute lab experiments to develop efficient, robust, scalable and cost-effective downstream purification processes.

  • Analyze and interpret process and analytical data to make sound decisions.

  • Maintain accurate and complete lab notebooks. Authoring technical reports and data summaries.

  • Present results in internal meetings.

  • Interact with internal and external partners.

  • Support downstream process tech transfer, scale-up, clinical and commercial manufacturing as needed.

  • Help maintain lab inventory/cleanliness and order lab consumables.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 6 months, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June (Summer).

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

Who You Are

Required Education

You meet one of the following criteria:

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student).

  • Must have attained a Bachelor's Degree (not currently enrolled in a graduate program).

  • Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student).

  • Must have attained a Master's Degree.

  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).

  • Must have attained a PhD.

Required Majors: Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biochemistry, Chemistry or Biochemical Engineering.

Required Skills:

  • Basic lab skills: Buffer making, chromatography or filtration operation.

  • Strong organizational skills and detailed documentation abilities.

  • Work independently in hands-on laboratory setting, self-motivated to learn and develop new techniques.

  • Perform multiple tasks simultaneously, keep accurate records, follow instructions, and comply with company policies.

  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.

  • Teamwork is a must.

  • Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, multi-tasking biotech environment.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

  • Knowledge of purification of biologics, such as viral vectors, monoclonal antibodies, vaccines, and therapeutic recombinant proteins in the biopharma industry.

  • Understanding and hands-on experience in one or more of the following area: preparative chromatography, membrane filtration (NFF, TFF, viral filtration), membrane chromatography, continuous processing, process modeling.

  • Knowledge of analytical methods to support product and process characterization.

  • Knowledge of statistical methods for DOE design and data analysis (e.g. JMP).

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Philadelphia is $45.00-$50.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
