Position Summary

The Genetic Counselor serves the needs of individuals and families in the community affected by or at risk for genetic disease or birth defects by providing genetic counseling and assisting them in obtaining appropriate medical care. The Genetic Counselor is also an important educational resource for the community and other healthcare providers. The Genetic Counselor obtains and interprets detailed family histories, analyzes inheritance patterns, provides personalized risk assessment, reviews available family planning and testing options, orders genetic testing as appropriate, and coordinates appropriate referrals to healthcare providers and/or community and state support services.

Work situations require intense and difficult interaction with patients and families requiring a service-oriented individual with strong interpersonal skills, discretion, and good judgment. Internal contacts include staff and management throughout the MHS. External contacts include physicians, community agencies and outside organizations.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provides genetic counseling in the areas of cancer, pediatric, adult, and prenatal genetics including reviewing prognosis, determining need for and recommending additional testing, ordering testing (within scope of practice),describing treatment options and providing recurrence risk information.

  • Provides relevant pregnancy loss genetic services including but not limited to, physical examination, physician consultation, taking of clinical photographs, tissue collection and shipping, and genetic counseling.

  • Arranges for medical genetics evaluation as needed, assists consultant in providing services that day, and arranges any follow-up, including referrals to other services, genetic testing, and return visits.

  • Arranges and provides educational programs on human genetics services to physicians, health professionals, and the general public.

  • Works with patients, physicians, nurses, community representatives, and state program staff to implement program activities and encourages referrals by building appropriate relationships in the community.

  • Assists in collecting and analyzing program data related to national, state and local program policies and procedures.

  • Identifies and attends educational opportunities to maintain job knowledge.

Requirements:

  • Master's Degree conferred by a genetic counseling program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC)

  • Board certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) Or, American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) Or, Active Candidate Status by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC)

  • Washington State Genetic Counselor License

  • Previous experience in genetic counseling preferred

Pay and Benefit Expectations

We provide a comprehensive benefits package, including competitive salary, medical, dental and retirement benefits and paid time off. As required by various pay transparency laws, we share a competitive range of compensation for candidates hired into each position. The pay scale is $87,818.00 - $126,381.00 USD. However, pay is influenced by factors specific to applicants, including but not limited to: skill set, level of experience, and certification(s) and/or education. If this position is associated with a union contract, pay will be reflective of the appropriate step on the pay scale to which the applicant's years of experience align.
