Description:

Job Responsibilities:
The Controller performs complex, specialized accounting duties, and provides managerial leadership to employees engaged in various accounting functions or other fiscal operations. His/her work is performed under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for four functional areas within the Finance department: Accounting and Financial Reporting, Post-Award Grants, Accounts Payable, and PCard and Tcard reimbursements.
  • Responsible for day-to-day maintenance of the General Ledger (Banner), accounting controls, and daily, weekly, and monthly account reconciliations in accordance with the University of Illinois System accounting and reporting protocols.
  • Prepare monthly financial, statistical, and management reports, including variance to budget for review by the Chief Financial officer and Senior Management.
  • Maintains, coordinates, and publishes monthly financial closing schedules, and ensures that monthly close, account reconciliations, and analysis are performed as scheduled with supporting documentation.
  • Manage the annual external audit by establishing and monitoring deadlines for all year-end workpapers. This includes PBC workpapers prepared by other University departments.
  • Preparation and review of the annual financial statements, trial balance and all Mile Square year end audit workpapers.
  • Implement new accounting standards.
  • Responsible for maintaining internal control documentation and resolve any internal control findings.
  • Work in close collaboration with the University's Budget Office, University's Central Accounting and Financial reporting department and the UI Health Accounting and Financial reporting department.
  • Responsible for the monitoring and financial reporting of Mile Square's grant portfolio.
  • Collaborates with the research team by providing guidance on grant budget preparation and grant compliance.
  • Approve Pcard and Tcard expense reimbursements, ensuring compliance with University policies.
  • Oversee the accounts payable function, ensuring invoices are paid on a timely basis.
  • Manage a team of professionals on the finance team, this includes communicating clear expectations and responsibilities, provide guidance and training and monitor performance.
  • Assists in the preparation of the organization's annual financial audit, Medicare and Medicaid cost reporting, and other federal reports (e.g. Uniform Data System schedule preparation).
  • Identifies problems and requirement changes regarding management information needs, auditing and other fiscal procedures, account structures or reports, and automated accounting systems; recommends changes or modifications.
  • Works with Senior Management to develop non-standard reports requiring interpretation and analysis of trends.
  • Assists the Chief Financial Officer in monitoring of financial performance and the maintenance of reasonable and appropriate financial plans and forecasts.
  • Performs other related duties and/or projects as assigned.


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Certified Public Accountant or Certified Managerial Accountant certification.
  • Bachelor's degree with a major in accountancy
  • Within the five year requirement, a minimum of 2 years in managerial position.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in accounting and financial reporting role.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or other related field.
  • Knowledge and experience with Healthcare or Federally Qualified Health Centers.
  • Knowledge of Medicare/Medicaid regulations, related revenue adjustments, and revenue cycle concepts.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Government Accounting Standards Board (GASB) pronouncements.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Banner, Compass, and other accounting and data base systems utilized at UIC.
  • Experience in a public accounting firm
