The Position

2026 Summer Intern - Biotransformation Group, Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics

Department Summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a talented intern to join our biotransformation group in the Department of Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics (DMPK) at Genentech in South San Francisco, CA. The DMPK group is dedicated to enabling the discovery, development and commercialization of safe and effective medicines by elucidating the absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and pharmacokinetic properties of small molecule drug candidates. We accomplish this through the application of state-of-the-art technologies and sciences of bioanalysis, drug metabolism, drug transport and pharmacokinetics. The successful candidate will work closely with scientists in a highly-collaborative environment to support the biotransformation function.

This internship position is located inSouth San Francisco, on site.

The Opportunity

  • Update and enhance internal biotransformation AI/ML models.

  • Organize and curate a comprehensive metabolites database from multiple sources.

  • Partner with scientists to optimize the biotransformation workflow.

  • Summarize and present results to diverse scientific audiences.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates in May/June 2026.

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

Who You Are

Required Education:

You meet one of the following criteria:

- Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student).

- Must have attained a Master's Degree.

- Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).

Required Mayors:

Drug metabolism, data science or a related discipline.

Required skills:

  • Applicants should possess a strong foundational understanding of AI/ML frameworks and the ability to effectively collaborate with our Computational Center of Excellence.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Self-driven, can work both independently and collaboratively.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Experience in Python, RDkit, Cheminformatics and/or classical Machine learning is preferred.

  • Experience in metabolite identification and biotransformation pathways of small molecules is a plus.

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $50.00 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
