The Chief Executive Officer and Executive Vice President shall have responsibilities in the following areas:

    Serve as the chief executive officer and as Secretary of ASHP
  • Be responsible for administration of ASHP; direction of all operations, programs, and activities of ASHP; and hiring, firing, and compensation and benefits of staff, subject to establishment of general salary and benefit policies by the Board of Directors. The Executive Vice President shall, at all times, carry out the policy aims and programs as generally determined by the Board of Directors
  • As Secretary, the Executive Vice President shall keep and maintain an accurate record of the meetings of the Board of Directors, the House of Delegates, and such other activities of ASHP as the Board of Directors may direct. The Executive Vice President shall give all notices required by law. The Executive Vice President shall have authority to affix the corporate seal to any document requiring it and attest thereto by his or her signature.
  • As Secretary, the Executive Vice President shall keep and maintain an accurate record of the meetings of the Board of Directors, the House of Delegates, and such other activities of ASHP as the Board of Directors may direct. The Executive Vice President shall give all notices required by law. The Executive Vice President shall have authority to affix the corporate seal to any document requiring it and attest thereto by his or her signature.
  • The Executive Vice President may appoint an Assistant Secretary to attest to documents.
  • The Executive Vice President shall, by virtue of the office, be a nonvoting member of all councils, commissions, and committees of the Board of Directors; committees of the House of Delegates; and any other committee or component group established by the Board of Directors.
  • The Executive Vice President shall be chosen by and serve at the pleasure of the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors may, on behalf of ASHP, enter into a contract with the Executive Vice President with such terms and for such fixed period as the Board of Directors deems reasonable and in the best interests of ASHP. Failure of a person to continue in the office of Executive Vice President will not affect contract rights, except as the terms of that contract may so provide.

This is a hybrid position that requires candidates to live in the Washington, DC area and be present in the downtown Bethesda, Maryland office as needed. What You'll Be Doing

Strategic Objectives:

  • Strategic Leadership: Defines and executes the overall strategic direction for ASHP. Broadens and deepens ASHP's visibility and professional reputation as a premier national pharmacy association.
  • Operational Excellence: Oversees the organization's operations and continuously improves ASHP's responsiveness to its individual members, related state organizations, and emerging constituencies.
  • Professional Practice: Champions pharmacy practice expansion to broaden ASHP's professional offerings through the development of programs and policies relevant to the needs of an ever-diversifying membership.
  • Financial Performance: Manages the organization's financial health and ensures long-term sustainability.
  • Member and Community Engagement: Fosters relationships with members, partners, and staff to meet needs and expectations. Strengthens ASHP's position as a leading national voice regarding health-system pharmacy issues.
  • Talent Development: Builds and leads a future-facing, strategic, innovative, and high-performing team. Empowers ASHP's staff through team-oriented consensusbuilding to reach its ultimate capability.
  • Innovation: Embraces and drives transformational change to advance pharmacy practice.
  • Compliance: Ensures compliance with all relevant regulations and standards. Manages risk and responds to environmental uncertainty in a manner that positions ASHP and health-system pharmacy for success.
  • Advocacy: Represents ASHP in the broader community and advocates for the needs of members, patients, and the organization. Leads national policy and advocacy positioning to best support the profession.

Essential Functions of Role:

  • Establishes a clear organizational vision and implements strategies that promote innovation, practice advancement, and professional development in pharmacy.
  • Represents ASHP in healthcare policy, education, and interprofessional collaboration.
  • Acts as the official voice of ASHP on a range of practice and advocacy issues. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate across channels, including traditional media and digital platforms.
  • Effectively communicates and informs the Board of Directors and officers regularly on the operations of ASHP and its subsidiaries, and on all external and internal factors influencing them.
  • Plans, formulates, and recommends basic policies and programs that will further ASHP's mission, vision, objectives, and strategic plan, and executes all Board of Directors' decisions concerning them.
  • In cooperation with the Committee on Finance and the Treasurer, develops, recommends, and operates within an annual budget. Safeguards and administers all funds, physical assets, and other property of ASHP.
  • Develops and adopts specific policies, procedures, and programs to implement the general policies established by the Board of Directors for day-to-day administration and executes board-approved contracts and commitments.
  • Builds, encourages, and maintains effective collaborative relationships with other organizations.
  • Establishes a sound organizational structure for ASHP staff to implement the mission and vision of the organization.
  • Keeps and maintains accurate records of the meetings of the Board of Directors, the House of Delegates, and other activities as the Board may direct. Serves as a voting member of the ASHP Board of Directors.
  • Carries out other responsibilities as delegated or assigned by the officers or Board of Directors


What You Bring to ASHP

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (BS) required.
  • Advanced degree preferred, such as an MBA, MPH, PhD, or related field.
  • Active U.S. pharmacist license in good standing.
  • Significant and recent senior management experience in a healthcare system, academia, or national membership organization, plus an understanding of contemporary pharmacy practice.
  • Experience working with a Board of Directors and governance structures.
  • Demonstrated success in strategic planning, fiscal management, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Demonstrated experience with advocacy, public policy, or academic healthcare leadership.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational change management skills.
  • Integrity, high ethical standards, and professionalism in representing the organization and its mission.
  • Adaptability and initiative in dynamic, evolving environments.
  • Accountability and reliability in meeting responsibilities and deadlines.
  • Respect for all individuals in all interactions.
  • Commitment to service excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Emotional intelligence and diplomacy in stakeholder engagement.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with all stakeholders, including other associations, organizations, regulatory bodies, academia, and other groups.
