The Los Angeles Times is seeking an ambitious, imaginative and collaborative art director to join its creative department on an interim basis.



This position will lead art direction for our award-winning Food brand, ensuring all work aligns with our established style guides. The ideal candidate has experience both illustrating and art-directing for editorial. Experience on photo sets is a bonus.



You will be expected to pitch ideas to design and story editors, handle quick-turn daily assignments and manage larger, more complex projects.

Responsibilities:



  • Design and art-direct covers, stories and packages for print, mobile, web and social media
  • Collaborate with editors, photo editors, photographers, writers, audience engagement editors and more
  • Create original quick turn and more involved illustrations for our stories
  • Commission illustrators
  • Art-direct photo shoots
  • Continue to grow our diverse database of illustrators and photographers, with a focus on finding L.A.-based contributors
  • Coordinate Food projects for both digital and print
  • Present ideas to senior leadership, receive feedback and iterate



Requirements:



  • At least five years of professional experience as an art director in the branding, editorial or agency space with much of this experience being digitally focused
  • A portfolio of work that demonstrates excellence in art-directing illustrations, typography and photography as well as experience working on photo shoots
  • Strong multitasking, organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Strong working knowledge of design software: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Figma
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to design for digital stories and social media
  • A history of designing and developing alternate story forms
  • Effective at working in a team environment



This full-time, temporary position is expected to last three months. We will consider candidates who would work remotely


in other time zones as well as those who would work in El Segundo, Calif.

The pay scale the Company reasonably expects to pay for this position at the time of the posting is $36.82 to $45,77 and takes into account a wide range of factors including but not limited to skill set, experience, training, licenses, certifications, and other business or organizational needs. Compensation will be determined based on the above factors along with the requirements of the position. At the L.A.
