Nature of Job

Reinforcing ironworkers place reinforcing steel bars in forms that will be filled with concrete. The bars must be lifted, carried and placed by hand. They are then held in position by wrapping and tying wire at the intersections of steel. This reinforcing steel is used in the construction of buildings, bridges, parking structures, dams, storage tanks and other projects. The work environment may include but not be limited to:




  • Job site construction activities may involve close proximity to hazardous equipment and machinery.
  • Walking on open footings, mounds of dirt, rocks and debris.
  • Exposure to noise of various heavy equipment and power tools.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Other duties may be assigned (to include but not be limited to): To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.


Responsibility of manpower to ensure the site work is performed SAFELY, productively and to job specifications (for numerous locations). Liason for Field, Shop, and Office. Prepare meeting items and hold meetings for Field personnel as appropriate. Responsible for personnel issues and/or reporting such to immediate Supervisor or Human Resources Manager. May act as Foreman in the absence of same.


Ensures that all time and tonnage reports are done correctly and on a consistent basis. Supports team in maintaining weekly schedules. Attends scheduling and or coordination of meetings with customers. Helps with pricing of the project's future work including production and crew mix. Ensures that projects are tracking to the labor production and crew mix at bid time. Ability to manage and maintain project budget on the placing side of the project.


Ability to read and interpret documents such as project drawings, job specifications, shop drawings, safety rules, instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to follow routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with employees of organization in a one on one situation or in small groups. Ability to follow verbal instructions. Must be knowledgeable of Field Ironworker collective bargaining agreements.

For an average eight (8) hour day, for five (5) days a week, a typical reinforcing steel ironworker Superintendent may be required to perform the following types of activities:




  • Walking 7-8 hours per day

  • Kneeling 3 hours per day
  • Bending 3 hours per day
  • Twisting 7-8 hours per day
  • Squatting 2 hours per day

Education
