Job Summary

By assisting the City of Kirkland's Planning & Building Department in the performance of their duties, the Graduate Intern is given the opportunity to learn about City Planning and the functions and activities of municipal government.

Distinguishing Characteristics: This position serves as an entry-level position designed to expose the student intern to operational, budgetary, and policy functions managed by the department. The intern will assist team members on existing or new projects and will gain work experience to increase their ability to compete in the workforce for other entry-level positions.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist with the implementation and promotion of projects related to the City's Work Plan.
  • Assist with drafting reports, memorandums, and presentations to advance the Planning & Building Department and City Council priorities.
  • Undertake research projects to assist with the development or advancement of priority program.
  • Fosters a positive and supportive work environment; promotes equity and inclusion in the workplace, contributing to an environment of respectful living and working in a multicultural society.

Peripheral Duties:
  • Performs functions as assigned in the City's emergency response plan in the event of an emergency.
  • Perform other duties as needed in support of the Planning & Building Department.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work and communicate well with a wide range of people, including elected officials, City Manager, City department heads, Kirkland staff, and City residents.
  • Ability to work independently and quickly.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Some computer skills. Knowledge of Excel and Word desirable.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited college or university, preferably pursuing a degree related to Planning.
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing, and computer skills required.

Physical Demands and Working Environment:
Work will primarily be performed at Kirkland City Hall. Job involves office/computer work and sitting for long periods of time. Some field work/site visits around the City of Kirkland and occasional attendance at evening meetings may be required.
