Position description

The University of California, Davis, School of Medicine, Department of Public Health Sciences invites applications for an Assistant Professional Researcher. The Professional Researcher develops and oversees their own independent, creative, and high-quality research program. He/she takes major responsibility and leadership for his/her programs. Generally, the candidate would be expected to secure funding as a Principal Investigator but may be funded as a co-PI within a large center or collaborative program grant on which many independent investigators are working, as long as it is clear that the activities led by the professional researcher within the larger project constitute his/her own independent research program. Appointees do not have teaching responsibilities. The mission of the Department of Public Health Sciences is to improve the health of people through population-based approaches by developing and evaluating educational programs, conducting epidemiologic research, engaging in public service, and developing policy and other translational outcomes. The Department covers a broad area of public health domains with a focus on health promotion and disease and injury prevention, occupational and environmental health, cancer, health care policy, aging, ethical issues, reproductive, women's, children's, rural, minority, immigrant and global health.

I. RESEARCH (90%)

Research activity (55%)

This candidate is required to develop an independent research program investigating topics relevant to the research area of childhood environmental epidemiology with an emphasis on mixtures analysis, modifiable factors, and molecular mechanisms. The candidate will design or assist in the design of specific projects, including the selection of appropriate methods and techniques. In some cases, the candidate may supervise students or technicians regarding the technical aspects of the research, including methods development, troubleshooting problems, interpreting results, and planning follow-up research and/or analyses in his or her area of expertise.

The candidate will conceptualize and design new research projects and will be expected to conduct statistical analyses, interpret results, and will complete & submit several publications stemming from new and existing studies. Studies will include but are not limited to conducting statistical analyses to understand the impact of exposure to mixtures of chemicals and air pollutants on both birth outcomes and neurodevelopment. Studies developed will also understand the impact of modifiable factors, such as stress, on the relationship between exposures and outcomes, or will integrate intermediary molecular markers into the evaluation of the exposure to outcome pathway. In addition, the candidate will partake in collaborative projects disseminating relevant research findings in written, or other appropriate means to community members, other stakeholders, and/or scientists.

Publication (25%)

The candidate will publish research in peer-reviewed journals either independently or in collaboration with the PI or other members of the research team. For first-authored publications, this will include responsibility for communications with the journal.

Grant Writing and Reporting (10%)

The candidate will conceptualize and develop novel research ideas, design the specific studies, and may prepare grant proposals as PI, or as Co-Investigator in larger proposals with the PI of the research team, in which the candidate will independently write and be responsible for a major component or project within the proposed team science. These grants would typically be submitted to funding agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, state agencies, and other funding organizations. The candidate will prepare budgets and other grant components as needed. For grants in which the candidate serves as PI, they will prepare required reports to the agencies that fund the research, and assist for reports in the larger team science awards in which they are a co-investigator.

II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5 %)

The candidate will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to his/her specific field and will serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications as appropriate. The candidate will contribute to large, national studies to promote activity around evaluation of chemical exposures in the consortium. The candidate will attend seminars to present research results and give research presentations at national and international scientific meetings. The candidate will serve as a reviewer of research proposals and manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications as appropriate. The candidate is encouraged to participate in other professional development activities, such as courses in grant-writing, data analysis, study management, etc.

III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5 %)

Although not required for the Assistant rank, the candidate is encouraged to engage in University service activities such as guest lecturing and committee service. Teaching classroom courses is not an expectation of this position. The candidate will engage in public outreach activities that may include presenting scientific research results to the general public, providing relevant advice to individuals, or consultations with public agencies.
