| Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
Transportation & Parking (http://www.move.unc.edu/) is an essential service at
UNC Chapel Hill and is responsible for coordinating traffic, parking, and transportation to meet the diverse access needs of an academic and health care campus population consisting of 30,000 students, 19,000 employees, and up to 1 million patients and visitors annually. Transportation and Parking strives to provide high-level service to students, employees, and visitors who work, live, and visit the University and
UNC Health Care System. Transportation and Parking partners with stakeholders and customers to manage this key University infrastructure system effectively and efficiently balancing limited resources and the diverse access needs of the campus community. The department manages 10 parking decks and 160 surface parking areas with approximately 23,000 parking spaces providing employee, student, patient/visitor, and event access to campus. The department has approximately 94 permanent employees, approximately 45 temporary employees, and an operating budget of approximately $31 million. The University and
UNC HealthCare System rely on a multi-modal transportation system, utilizing local and regional transportation to provide access to the campus and hospitals.
UNC partners with local and regional transit agencies to provide fare-free-at-boarding transportation locally and subsidized regional transit opportunities for employees and students. Transportation and Parking plans, manages, and implements traffic, transit, and parking services daily and during major campus events. Transportation provides essential input for the campus Master Plan and Development Plan initiatives to ensure development and operation of key transportation infrastructure services to support institutional missions. |
| Position Summary |
Transportation and Parking maintains ten parking decks with approximately 8,200 parking spaces and an additional 14,300 spaces in surface parking lots located throughout campus. This position performs daily inspections, maintenance and minor repairs in
UNC parking facilities to maintain clean and safe access for students, staff, and visitors. This position is required to respond to adverse weather that includes snow removal from parking decks and pedestrian pathways. This position maintains parking equipment, lighting systems, power cleaning equipment and yearly pavement marking and lot striping. |
| Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification. Optional Guidelines: experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. |
| Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Basic knowledge of principles and techniques in a variety of mechanical and electrical trades, able to follow oral/written instructions, possess knowledge and experience working with manual and power tools, including digital multimeter. Basic knowledge of general maintenance repair and troubleshooting of electro-mechanical equipment. Basic knowledge of construction techniques & tools, methods, practices, equipment and materials used in parking facilities maintenance. Ability to accurately report work performed with good communication skills, verbal as well as written. Must possess good customer service skills. Valid North Carolina driver's license required in order to operate departmental vehicles. |
| Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Ability to troubleshoot and repair gas-powered cleaning equipment, leaf blowers etc. The ability to troubleshoot and repair electro-mechanical parking equipment (
PARCS) and parking meter stations. Have basic knowledge using computer systems including Microsoft Office Suite and job specific software. |

This position reports to duty in adverse weather (Critical Employee Status). Must be able to lift/move 50 lbs. and move 100 lbs. with or without accommodation, climb stairs/ladders, bend, stoop and perform overhead work. |
