TITLE

Compensation Specialist

JOB SUMMARY

Performs advanced professional work in the oversight and administration of the university's compensation program, providing analytical and strategic support to ensure equitable and competitive pay practices across the institution. This position contributes to the development and continuous refinement of compensation initiatives in alignment with organizational goals and workforce strategies, operating under limited supervision and in close collaboration with the Manager of Compensation, who provides final determinations. Performance is evaluated based on outcomes, accuracy, and adherence to University Policies & Procedures.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to: Manager of Compensation

Supervises: No Supervisory responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES - May include, but not limited to the following:

  • Recommends and implements strategic process enhancements and policy refinements to strengthen efficiency, compliance, and service delivery within the compensation function.
  • Supports the development and execution of departmental goals, objectives, and strategic initiatives in coordination with the Manager of Compensation.
  • Oversees the accurate and timely administration of compensation transactions, forms, and data across multiple operational systems, including Oracle Cloud.
  • Generates and interprets complex data reports to inform strategic decision-making, identify trends, and provide actionable insights for university leadership.
  • Conducts comprehensive position analyses utilizing CUPA data, Huron's compensation tools, and institutional benchmarks to maintain market-competitive and equitable salary structures that align with the university's strategic compensation objectives.
  • Coordinates cross-functional collaboration among HR, Payroll, Recruitment, and departmental partners to ensure consistency and alignment in strategic compensation practices.
  • Provides analytical and consultative support on compensation-related policy, procedure, and compliance matters, including FLSA and other federal and state regulations.
  • Develops and refines compensation procedures to promote operational efficiency, data integrity, and service excellence across all functional areas.
  • Reviews and advises on departmentally submitted compensation forms such as CHEFs, SAMs, and PAFs, ensuring compliance with established standards and strategic compensation frameworks.
  • Produces and communicates comprehensive reports reflecting campuswide compensation metrics, including position changes, pay equity trends, and staffing analytics aligned with workforce planning.
  • Conducts periodic audits of system functionality and data accuracy, including testing of newly implemented Oracle Cloud updates and patches.
  • Partners with the business analyst team to identify and resolve system performance issues and ensure the reliability of compensation-related workflows.
  • Contributes to the development and maintenance of compensation-related websites, tools, and resources to ensure transparency and accessibility.
  • Designs and delivers training sessions, presentations, and orientations to promote institutional understanding of compensation policies and practices.
  • Serves as a professional resource and liaison for departments regarding compensation questions, position classification, and procedural interpretation.
  • Assists the Manager of Compensation in the formulation and implementation of university-wide strategic compensation strategies and policy frameworks.
  • Performs data validation and analysis for individual compensation payments (ICPs) and other special pay transactions to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Attends Human Resources related conferences, seminars, and training; some travel required.

  • Performs other duties as requested.

EDUCATION

Bachelor's degree in human resources or a related field of study required. PHR/SPHR certification preferred.

EXPERIENCE

Five years of progressively responsible Human Resources experience preferably in higher education.

REQUIREMENT

Regular and reliable attendance at the University during regular scheduled days and work hours is an essential function of this position.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the public.

  • Ability to provide administrative guidance within area of responsibility, providing direct training and supervision as needed.

  • Ability to apply budgetary and fiscal planning techniques within financial constraints.

  • Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities.

  • Ability to integrate resources, policies, and information for the determination of procedures, solutions, and other outcomes.

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally, by phone, in person, and in writing.

  • Ability to use a personal computer and other office equipment, including university related software and email.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
