Job Summary

Pharmacy Technician

This position will perform a variety of tasks included but not limited to being responsible for drug storage, preparation and distribution of Medications throughout UCDMC under the supervision of a pharmacist and perform maintenance and Inventory functions.The Technician staff are responsible for drug storage, preparation and distribution of medications throughout UCDMC under the supervision of a pharmacist and perform maintenance and inventory functions. This position will staff various COVID 19 Vaccination Clinic sites as needed. Position will transition to full Inventory Management Technician duties as vaccination clinics close.

The Pharmacy Department provides comprehensive pharmaceutical services (unit dose, IV admixtures, clinical services, infusion pumps and teaching) throughout the Medical Center complex 24 hours per day. The Department is comprised of three inpatient, six outpatient pharmacies, a sterile production lab, and the full complement of pharmacy purchasing, stores and distribution. Staffing consists of professional and technical and administrative support personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/Skills:

  • California Licensed Pharmacy Technician

  • California Driver's License, have a driving record that is in accordance with local polies/ procedures, and /or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program

  • 6 months of recent work experience in an Acute Inpatient Hospital Pharmacy setting

  • Experience in performing Inventory Management & Receiving

  • Experience in Purchasing/Receiving in a medical setting

  • Experience with non-sterile compounding tasks using equipment including, but not limited to:graduated cylinders, mortars and pestles, scales, stirring machines, etc.

  • Experience using and troubleshooting automated dispensing machines.

  • Lift packages of up to 50 pounds

  • Complete working knowledge of, and skill to apply, practices, principles and techniques of patient care related to area of expertise.

  • Must be able to accurately perform Pharmacy calculations.

  • Must be able to recognize situations that exceed technician authority and ability and must be referred to a pharmacist for resolution.

  • Written and oral communication skills to clearly and concisely provide information, explanations and instructions to, and to elicit information from others with varying levels of ability to understand, including individuals who are ill or distressed, or who may not speak English.

  • Knowledge of standard garbing and cleaning procedures for a sterile clean- room environment.

  • Ability to operate Unit Dose (UD) packaging machines correctly and accurately, completing appropriate documentation.

P PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/Work Experience/Skills:

  • Knowledge of working with Medical Dispensing Unit Pyxis

  • National Board Certification

  • Experience with Pharmacy EMR system-Epic, simplfi 797

  • Experience maintaining iv infusion pumps

  • Previous UC Davis Health Experience

  • Knowledge of current Pharmacy terminology and law.

  • Knowledge of current regulatory standards of sterile and non-sterile compounding procedures related to USP Chapters 797, 795 and 800.

  • Ability to exercise discretion to ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained, and a professional, respectful clinic/department environment always exists.

  • Problem-solving skills to independently recognize and define a problem and identify the resources available to help solve the problem.

  • Decision-making skills to independently create and implement viable solutions and follow through to ensure the problem is resolved.

  • Ability to impart knowledge and develop the skills of students participating in training programs, as well as new hires and staff seeking additional opportunities.

  • Knowledge of principles and applications for horizontal and vertical laminar air flow hoods.

  • Ability to manipulate needles, syringes, ampules and vials using proper aseptic technique.

  • Knowledge of dilution standards and ability to perform related calculations.

  • Pysis Experience

  • Inventories and appropriately manages vaccine preparation and transport of COVID 19 vaccine.
  • Facilitate vaccine, drug, and supply delivery to all COVID 19 vaccine clinic and sites. Requires acquire preparation of vaccine products, accountability tracking and documentation, and verification of delivery location and receipt of product.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Lift equipment/supplies, move containers exceeding 50 pounds.

  • Must complete mandatory Trainings within 30 days from the start date of first assignment.
