The Position

2026 Summer Intern - Regev Lab - Cellular Identity

Department Summary

Genentech is seeking a PhD intern to support research aimed at dissecting cellular diversity and dynamic state changes in cancer systems. This project focuses on investigating how defined molecular perturbations influence cellular identity and how these induced states adapt within diverse environments. By combining experimental profiling with downstream computational analyses, the work will help clarify relationships between molecular changes and resulting tumor phenotypes.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

The intern will contribute to a collaborative research effort that emphasizes rigorous experimentation, integrative data interpretation, and clear scientific communication. Insights generated through this project will inform broader efforts to understand context-dependent regulatory programs and mechanisms of disease progression in oncology research.

Over the course of the 3-month internship (could be extended), you will work closely with a collaborative team of experimental and computational scientists and will be mentored by researchers within Genentech's oncology research community. This is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in advanced molecular assays, data integration, and scientific communication in an industry research setting.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June 2026.

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

Who You Are

Required Education:

  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).

Required Majors: Cellular Biology, Molecular Biology, Cancer Biology, or a related field.

Required Skills:

  • Tissue Processing & Experimental Assays: Experience with processing animal- derived tissue samples, including tissue dissociation, sectioning, and preparation for downstream assays. Familiarity with techniques such as immunolabelling, flow cytometry, and preparation of samples for single-cell or bulk molecular profiling is highly desirable.

  • Single-Cell Data Generation & Computational Analysis: Experience generating and/or analyzing single-cell datasets (e.g., single-cell RNA-seq). Ability to perform quality control, data exploration, and interpretation of single-cell gene expression data in the context of cellular states.

  • Data Integration & Interpretation: Ability to integrate results across experimental assays and molecular readouts to derive biologically meaningful insights related to cellular heterogeneity and state transitions.

  • Scientific Communication & Collaboration: Ability to synthesize experimental and analytical results into clear visualizations and effectively communicate findings to cross- functional research teams. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively while maintaining detailed documentation and reproducible workflows.
