POSITION SPECIFICS

The Comparative Medicine Animal Resource Program seeks a non-tenure line faculty research veterinarian to support the transition of the Comparative Medicine Laboratory Animal Medicine Residency Program into its newly restructured postdoctoral training program. This role will provide critical veterinarian care to our animal resource program.

The role will be responsible for:

Veterinary care:

  • Participate in daily clinical rounds of the assigned animal facility.

  • Work closely with the veterinary technologist as applicable, providing guidance, mentoring, and training, in the management of clinical cases.

  • Provide continuous improvement of processes and procedures within the animal facility, including writing standard operating procedures, policies, and guidelines.

  • Assist with investigations and remediation, when applicable, for adverse animal health events.

  • Provide veterinary support and consultation to researchers.

  • Perform necropsies and gather animal history, as requested.

  • Help to provide clinical coverage in other animal facility areas when needed.

On-call veterinary support:

  • Be available to come on-site and perform veterinary duties on weekends when required (i.e. a USDA-regulated animal requires critical care, and/or when there is no veterinary technologist assigned).

  • Participate in the on-call schedule. Veterinarians must be available 24-7 for their assigned week to respond to any after-hours or weekend calls.

  • Provide veterinary support to veterinary technologists who are on-site on the weekends.

IACUC protocol veterinary pre-review & inspections:

  • Conduct thorough and timely veterinary pre-reviews of IACUC protocols that are assigned by the IACUC administrators.

  • Provide veterinary consultation for researchers who have questions about animal procedures.

  • Assist the IACUC with laboratory and animal facility inspections.

Hands-on training program support:

  • Participate as an instructor for the Responsible Care and Use of Laboratory Animals Training Program, teaching small group classes.

  • Provide customized trainings to individuals who cannot join the small-group classes.

Didactic class participation/instruction:

  • Participate as an instructor in didactic activities for the lab animal medicine resident.

  • Assist in the development of class syllabi, lectures, assignments, and grading.
