Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. This position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

With over 470 employees, the Office of the Public Defender is the largest of the five indigent defense offices in Maricopa County. We are also one of the largest public defender offices in the country. We Require

  • Six months of clerical experience
  • High School Diploma or GED

We Also Value

  • Multi-line telephone system experience
  • Basic skills in Windows and Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Edge
  • Prior work experience in a legal or criminal justice-related setting
  • Bilingual skills (English/Spanish)

Job Contributions

  • Manage a high volume of incoming calls on a multi-line phone system, screen, direct, and transfer calls, and answer caller inquiries within the realm of authority
  • Greet visitors and direct walk-in traffic
  • Monitor visitor building access and access badges
  • Sort mail and packages for pick-up and distribution throughout the office
  • Electronically accesses court records and case information to answer inquiries from internal and external customers
  • Perform miscellaneous clerical tasks; process "no complaints filed" cases and close them out in the case management system.

Working Conditions

  • Works regularly in a standard office environment, requiring the ability to sit and perform duties on a computer for long periods of time
  • Interruptions, time pressures, high volume of work, handling multiple or complex tasks, accuracy, concentration/vigilance, teamwork, public contact, and working with criminal defendants may be constant occurrences.Unscheduled tasks, frequently changing tasks, decision making, and working in close physical proximity with others may be frequent occurrences
