Job Summary


Under general direction, the Histotechnologist grosses tissue in preparation for histology processing. This position verifies that all specimens are labeled correctly to allow for accurate and complete identification throughout all subsequent procedures. Measures, evaluates, and sections skin tissue. Documents this process by drawing explanatory sketches, which becomes part of the patient record. Stores and disposes specimens as applicable. Follows established precautions and protocols for the disposal of biological and chemical hazardous waste. Disinfects work area and instruments. Supports activities required by The Joint Commission.

Incumbent is required to prepare tissue specimens for examination by a pathologist. This process includes embedding tissue, using a microtome to cut tissue and applying routine histologic techniques and a variety of immunohistochemical stains.

The Dermatopathology and Oral Pathology Service is a fast paced, high-volume laboratory and this position requires significant attention to detail across all areas of the lab.


The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $49.97 - $62.25 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Pathology at UCSF aims to achieve the highest standards in patient care, research and education. The Department provides diagnostic pathology services in a wide variety of subspecialties with highly trained subspecialists who are recognized nationally and internationally for their expertise. The Department's research programs are diverse and interface with a wealth of basic and translational research programs that are a hallmark of UCSF. Our educational programs include a research-intensive academic residency program and fellowships in cytopathology, dermatopathology, gastrointestinal and liver pathology, gynecologic pathology, neuropathology and surgical pathology.

Required Qualifications


  • BS in Science or meets CLIA requirements for high complexity testing.
  • Minimum 1 year experience in a high-volume histology laboratory.
  • Familiarity in handling hazardous chemicals in a safe manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Ability to maintain a high level of productivity in grossing, microtomy and embedding.
  • Experience with tissue grossing and processing.
  • HT/HTL (ASCP) certification or eligible.
