Position Summary

The Lifeguard II position will split work hours between Lifeguard and Swim Instructor I. As a Lifeguard you will monitor activities, vigilantly scan and provide assistance to swimmers, prevent accidents, protect life and enforce regulations as well as control access to pools, cabanas, and lockers; provide first aid and lifesaving actions when necessary. This position is also required to assist with general facility maintenance and cleaning duties as assigned. During Swim Instructor hours this position will instruct students of all ages and ability levels in subject areas related to aquatics and the present subject matter by demonstrating proper technique, and teaching assigned upper and lower levels of curriculum.

Attendance at all meetings and in-service training is required.

Duties and Responsibilities

Lifeguard Position:



  • Considerately and patiently enforce RJKCCC rules to provide a safe environment for all members, visitors, and employees. Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe areas and actions. Maintain order in swimming areas.
  • Must be able to analyze situations and adopt a quick and effective course of action; maintain constant vigilance of an assigned zone to identify any signs of danger.
  • Rescue swimmers in danger of drowning.
  • Provide first aid, rescue breathing, and CPR when needed.
  • Inspect and maintain cleanliness of swimming pool areas, locker rooms, restrooms, trash cans, cleaning equipment, aquatic equipment storage areas, and other areas as assigned.
  • Maintain records and reports as assigned.
  • May work with any aspect of aquatic programs and special events, as required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and customers in person and over the phone.
  • Carry out The Salvation Army mission in your actions and words during your employment.
  • Must wear standard apparel as prescribed by the Aquatics Manager and exhibit a professional appearance at all times while on duty.
  • Must clock in wearing uniform 10 minutes prior to the start of scheduled rotation shift, or 15 minutes prior to the first scheduled swim lesson.



Swim Instructor I Position:



  • Ability to instruct with sound principles in the area of American Red Cross Water Safety.
  • Ability to speak and communicate with both small and large groups of people with poise and enthusiasm, including but not limited to children, parents, coworkers, and staff.
  • Provide individualized development guidelines for "learn to swim" participants.
  • Create, teach, demonstrate, and implement planned classes suitable for children and adults of all ages and abilities.
  • Ability to write class outlines, block plans, and daily lesson plans.
  • Critique and give feedback to participants regarding their performance level.
  • Provide a safe, fun, and enjoyable learning environment for all participants.
  • Maintain open communication with the direct supervisor regarding scheduling and coaching.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor and attitude with students of all ages, patrons, customers, staff, and upper management.
  • Must demonstrate proper time management skills, be on time, and arrive 15 minutes before the first scheduled class, prepared and ready to teach.
  • Communicate promptly any student progress and necessary class adjustments to supervisor, as necessary.
  • Maintain a consistent schedule; must be able to commit to a full session of swimming lessons.
  • Help facilitate equality and fairness among all participants.
  • Ensure that any class changes or modifications are communicated to all class participants efficiently.
  • Assist with setup and clean up before and after lessons.
  • Adhere to all Protecting the Mission policies and procedures as established by The Salvation Army.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions needed and ability to ensure compliance/adherence by all class members.
  • Maintain a safe working environment; report all harmful problems with facilities to the proper supervisor.
  • Follow and adhere to all The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.
  • Report all accidents, incidents, and potential unsafe conditions immediately to the appropriate personnel and/or supervisor.


  • Other tasks as required.



General Qualifications and Proficiencies



  • Must be at least 15 years of age.


  • Must be able to read, write and communicate in English.
  • Must be able to work varied shifts including early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays and split shifts.


  • Experience working with the public.


  • Demonstrate the ability to relate positively and energetically with staff, clients, members, and customers. Ability to be self-motivated, work independently, and in a team environment. Must also have effective communication skills and engage positively with the public, co-workers, and supervisors.


  • Prior experience as a lifeguard is highly desirable.
  • Must have prior to start of employment unless otherwise noted and must maintain current certification in the following:


  • American Red Cross Lifeguard certification
  • American Red Cross Water Park Lifeguard certification within first 90 days of employment
  • American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification to include AED
  • American Red Cross Oxygen Administration certificate
  • American Red Cross Blood borne Pathogens certification within 90 days of employment


  • Meet all health and safety regulations as defined by the Health Department as well as TSA.
  • Have a philosophy of education and child development, which is consistent with that of the Center and TSA.
  • Have the ability to work with children, parents, and staff in a capacity of leadership, counseling and education.



Physical Requirements



  • Must maintain minimum fitness level to be able to accomplish:

    • 300-yard swim in less than 15 minutes
    • Tread water for 2 minutes without the use of hands
    • Retrieve 10-lb brick from deep end and kick it back to the shallow end on back




  • Position requires proficient swimming ability and endurance. Must perform the proper application of rescue and first-aid techniques. This position requires the ability to properly extract victims from the pool(s) to the deck, and ability to lift and carry at least 40 lbs., sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, jog, pull, push, balance, reach and ability to use fingers and hands. Position may require operating equipment such as a computer keyboard and standard office equipment.
  • The ability to demonstrate proficiency with freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and proficiency demonstrating butterfly is preferred.
  • Must be in good physical and mental health, capable of meeting the demands of all aquatic areas.
