Geosyntec has an exciting opportunity for an experience attorney as Principal Counsel - Risk Management as part of Geosyntec's Legal Department. This position can be based from any of our U.S. locations such as Chicago, IL, or Acton, MA. Hybrid and remote work schedules are available for this position. The ideal candidate will work with Chief Legal Officer and other members of the corporate legal department to support dynamic professional engineering and consulting practice. Primary responsibility will be to oversee and manage the company's risk management policies, processes and awareness, which will include ensuring compliance with risk review process, working closely with project teams and regional leadership to evaluate project related risks, develop risk management approaches and approve risky project opportunities; develop training and other resources to increase awareness around the company on risks and risk management approaches to support the Company's operations and project work; evaluate Company's operations and identify emerging risks; develop risk management approaches to minimize the Company's exposure to risks identified; support the Company's commercial insurance program; and collaborate with other members of the Legal Department and our operating regions regarding the Company's risk management program. Provide risk allocation support to project teams when pursuing projects that fit within various risk categories. Work with Chief Legal Officer, the other members of the legal department to offer legal support to the business and manage risk.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Collaboration and mentoring are cornerstones of Geosyntec's culture. We operate under a sell-manage-do culture, and so we expect that you'd work on challenging technical projects while leveraging your existing knowledge and experience to help Geosyntec expand its current practices and capabilities through business development and client management. You may also be asked to take on project management responsibilities, along with staff management and development, and mentoring tasks. Some of the key responsibilities may include:

    Work with Chief Legal Officer, and the legal department to refine, improve, implement and manage the Company's risk management program. Support and enforce the Company's risk management philosophy and principles.
  • Oversee and participate in the risk management strategy and process adopted by the company; identify and implement adjustments to the risk management strategy and process as needed as the company grows and evolves;
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, risk issues and contracting requirements and case law.
  • Provide guidance to staff regarding subcontractor compliance with subcontract requirements including, but not limited to, insurance coverage and other terms and conditions.
  • Increase awareness throughout the company regarding risk-related issues and risks; develop training programs as needed.
  • Assist with and maintain the internal communication portal (SharePoint site) for the legal department to offer a resource for the practice.
  • Identify and onboard processes, procedures and technology solutions to improve the Company's adherence to our risk program and department's performance and efficiency.
  • Provide high quality, positive and responsive risk-related services to both internal and external clients.
  • Provide guidance and support to regional leadership and project teams on contract or risk management related issues.
  • Supervise, manage and mentor any future direct reports added to support the risk management function within the legal department. Work closely with, collaborate and coordinate with other members of the Legal Department to develop new risk management approaches, identify training topics, engage with operations and project teams and generally support the operations of the Company.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as needed.
  • Developing business opportunities with new and existing clients and preparing associated proposals.


Education and Licensure

  • Bachelor's degree. (required)
  • Juris Doctor. (required)
  • License to practice law. (required)


Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of legal experience in a law firm or in-house department with making risk based decisions, contract law experience, including the review, administration and negotiation of contracts; or equivalent combination of education and experience. (required)
  • Familiarity with the construction, engineering and consulting industry and project related risks and responsibilities. (required)
  • Some experience building a team, recruiting, supervising and mentoring others. (preferred)
  • Responsibility for the strategic adoption and implementation of policies and procedures. (preferred)
  • Familiarity with the US Federal procurement requirements and consultant insurance program experience. (preferred)
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint and PowerPoint and working knowledge of Excel. (required)
  • Must have the ability to efficiently and effectively manage individual workload including the ability to independently manage conflicting priorities, resolve conflicts cooperatively, and complete tasks in accordance with critical time-driven deadlines.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from colleagues, groups of professionals, senior management, project teams, clients and subcontractors. (required)
  • Ability to write correspondence, reports, procedure manuals and presentations conforming to prescribed style and format. (required)

This opportunity will be posted for at least five days. Below are the potential compensation ranges that we in good faith believe are applicable for this role at the time of this posting and are only applicable for jobs to be performed in the specified location(s) below. The typical base salary range for this position is just one component of Geosyntec's total compensation package for employees. Actual compensation will be determined based on education, experience, skill set and location.

  • Minimum Salary: $141,510/year / Maximum Salary: $226,415/year (Chicago, IL)
  • Minimum Salary: $154,985/year / Maximum Salary: $247,975/year (Acton, MA)
