Location: Saint Louis University, St. Louis, MO
Position Summary: The Engineering Technician supports the educational and research missions of the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering by maintaining, designing, and improving laboratory facilities and equipment. The technician will work closely with faculty, students, and staff to ensure that research and instructional laboratories operate safely, efficiently, and effectively. This position plays a vital role in developing new experimental systems, assisting with prototype fabrication, and supporting technical innovation across teaching and research activities.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: Laboratory Maintenance and Support * Maintain and support laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and facilities in both research and teaching laboratories. * Perform regular inspections, calibrations, and preventative maintenance to be sure proper operation and safety compliance. * Troubleshoot, repair, and coordinate service for mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and computer-controlled systems. * Maintain safe and organized lab environments in compliance with university and regulatory safety standards. Design and Fabrication * Design, build, and implement new experimental setups, test rigs, and teaching aids to support faculty and student projects. * Collaborate with faculty and students to develop mechanical and aerospace systems, including prototype design, machining, assembly, and testing. * Use CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar) and machining software to design parts and assemblies; fabricate components using machine tools, 3D printers, and other prototyping equipment. Technical Support and Collaboration * Provide hands-on technical support for faculty and student research, capstone projects, and laboratory instruction. * Assist in developing experimental procedures, selecting appropriate materials, and ensuring technical feasibility of research designs. * Train and mentor students in the safe and effective use of laboratory tools and equipment. Equipment and Inventory Management * Monitor and track departmental equipment usage, condition, and life cycle; recommend replacements or upgrades as needed. * Maintain inventory of tools, materials, and consumables; ensure availability of necessary supplies for teaching and research activities. * Work with administrative staff to procure and manage lab-related purchases and service contracts. Continuous Improvement and Innovation * Identify and implement improvements to laboratory infrastructure, procedures, and instructional technology. * Participate in modernizing and upgrading departmental equipment and experimental capabilities. * Stay informed about emerging technologies and fabrication methods relevant to mechanical and aerospace engineering education and research. Other Duties * Support departmental outreach and demonstration events as needed. * Perform other related duties as assigned by the Department Chair or supervisor Minimum Qualifications: * Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related technical field. * Demonstrated experience in laboratory or workshop maintenance, machining, and mechanical and electrical systems support. * Proficiency with CAD software and familiarity with design-to-manufacture processes. * Ability to translate blueprints and designs into working system prototypes * Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude and hands-on problem-solving skills. * Excellent communication and collaboration skills with faculty, staff, and students. * Knowledge of instrumentation, data acquisition, and control systems. * Experience with additive manufacturing, CNC machining, and/or electronics integration. * Familiarity with safety protocols in engineering and research laboratories.
Work Environment: * Work is primarily performed in laboratories, workshops, and offices. * May require occasional lifting of moderate-weight equipment and use of standard shop tools. * Compliance with university safety and training requirements is mandatory. Function
