Overview

The Associate for the Gas ENG Major Projects section is responsible for performing, or assisting in the performance of, all engineering required to support the Gas Transmission and Distribution system. The Associate performs technical assignments of basic complexity in engineering design and support. This engineering consists of supporting multiple phases of projects that increase the reliability and safety of the gas system. The Associate will be involved with the oversight of creating engineering drawings for projects. They will promote the continued improvement of work practices, administrative processes, and controls within Gas Transmission Engineering. The Associate will perform field inspections related to compliance and record gathering. The Associate will perform data analytics on a varied types of records for project.

The Associate may be assigned to work under the supervision of a Team Leader, such as an Engineer or a Senior Engineer.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Works as part of an interactive team with Gas Transmission Engineering Major Projects staff in planning the overall development of the Con Edison Gas Transmission and Distribution on both a long-range and a short-range basis.
  • Be able to work in all the Con Edison Gas service areas, Manhattan, The Bronx, Queens and Westchester County.
  • Under the direct supervision of a team leader, assist in designing major gas projects, e.g., gas transmission mains, regulator stations, gas distribution system reinforcements, etc. This may include direct preparation of drawings, cost estimates, and economic evaluations of various designs.
  • Assist in preparation and revision of Company specifications in conformance the federal and state agencies that govern Con Edison, the NY Public Service Commission and Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA).
  • Tracks progress, adheres to schedules, and follows up with appropriate departments for a complete engineering solution.
  • Performs other related tasks and assignments as required.
  • Become familiar with Pipeline welding per API-1104 as applied to Butt and Fillet welds.
  • Must be able to reference specifications, codes and standards for the installation and design of a pipeline repair.
  • Prepare documentation and coordinate proof testing to confirm maximum pressure by hydrostatic test or pneumatic test.
  • Work with engineers to design regulating stations the reduce gas pressure and maintain pressure under changing flow conditions.
  • Know the constituents that make up natural gas.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related technical field and 1 year's full time related work experience or 6 months related experience in Consolidated Edison's college cooperative or summer internship program. Related experience includes full-time or internship experience in application and theory of engineering principles in the area of planning, design and/or operation of the natural gas system.
Relevant Work Experience
  • Must have computer literacy and the ability to direct the usage of electronic computer-based analyticals. Required
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to schedules and meet deadlines. Required
  • Must have the ability to coordinate basic complex engineering projects. Preferred
  • Experience working productively and effectively in a team environment. Preferred
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. Preferred
Licenses and Certifications
  • Driver's License Required

  • Sit or stand to use a keyboard, mouse, and computer for the duration of the workday
  • Ability to read small print and symbols
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able and willing to travel to attend meetings/conference as necessary on Company business.
  • Must be able and willing to travel to locations within the company service territory as needed.
