Department Overview
Digital Innovation & Technology (DigIT) delivers data and technology services for the University of California Office of the President to support the UC mission. Our teams include Information Security, Planning (architecture and PMO), Application Development, HR & Payroll Development, Infrastructure, and Client Services teams. Position Summary
The Database Services team is seeking an experienced Senior Oracle & SQL Server Database Administrator (DBA) to provide technical leadership for missioncritical databases supporting the UC retirement system. This role will be the primary DBA for operational support, performance tuning, migrations, and ongoing maintenance of Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server environments hosted in AWS, with additional backup responsibility for DB2 and MySQL platforms. The Senior DBA will lead initiatives to modernize and migrate databases in AWS, leverage native AWS database services, and define standards and best practices for an enterpriseclass database environment. This is a technical role with a high degree of autonomy, owning complex, nonstandard problems and influencing database strategy, architecture, and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

30% Formulate and maintain procedures, standards, and best practices for Oracle and SQL Server database management across development, test, and Production environments. Design and execute database migrations, upgrades, and patching strategies, ensuring minimal downtime and data integrity. Lead assessment and migration of Oracle & SQL Server databases within AWS (EC2, RDS, and related services), including cutover planning, validation, and rollback strategies.

30% Apply advanced DBA concepts to design, implement, and administer enterpriseclass Oracle and SQL Server databases, including high availability, backup/recovery, and security. Lead performance tuning and optimization, including SQL tuning, index strategies, statistics management, query plan analysis, and configuration tuning at the database, OS, and storage layers. Develop and present technical studies, health assessments, and performance reports to management and senior technical staff. Document technical tasks, standards, and runbooks for use by other team members.

20% Design, implement, and maintain Oracle GoldenGate infrastructure for real-time and near-real-time replication across cloud environments. Administer Extract and Replicat processes, including configuration, monitoring, and troubleshooting of high-volume replication scenarios. Perform performance tuning of GoldenGate, including lag optimization and resource utilization. Conduct root cause analysis on replication failures, data discrepancies, and performance bottlenecks.

10% Support and maintain additional RDBMS platforms including MySQL and DB2 as needed. Act as a flexible team member capable of stepping into database platforms outside primary expertise when required, ensuring operational continuity across the broader database portfolio.

10% Provide routine and emergency 24x7 production support as part of an oncall rotation. Respond to incidents, troubleshoot complex database issues, and restore service within defined SLAs. Perform root cause analysis (RCA), contribute to the problem management process, and implement corrective and preventive actions. Work nights and weekends as needed to resolve critical issues, implement changes, and perform planned maintenance.

  • Min 8 years of relevant experience in database and applications management.

Skills and Abilities
Required Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of relational database management systems (RDBMS) concepts, standards, and best practices, with depth in Oracle and SQL Server databases.

  • Skills necessary to develop procedures and standards relating to database management systems.

  • Experience implementing and supporting enterprisegrade HA, DR & Replication. SQL Server Always On Availability Groups, clustering. Oracle Goldengate

  • Knowledge of migrating SQL Server databases from on-prem to AWS RDS instances.

  • Proven expertise in performance tuning and troubleshooting at multiple layers. AWR/ASH/ADDM, SQL and PL/SQL tuning, wait event analysis, Query Store, execution plan analysis, DMVs, blocking/deadlock resolution, index and statistics tuning.

  • Experience in migrating SQL Server & Oracle databases to AWS (RDS and/or EC2), including assessment, planning, tooling, and execution.

  • Understanding capacity planning, scalability, and performance modeling for database workloads, including storage throughput, memory, CPU, and network requirements.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, problem solving skills, service orientation, active listening, effective verbal and written communication skills and organizational skills.

  • Able to multi-task and prioritize tasks.

  • Ability to work independently on complex technical projects as well as on a team of technical professionals and relevant decision-makers.

  • Skills associated with implementing database enhancements that improve performance and reliability of the system at the software, hardware, and operating system level.

  • Strong security skills for protecting the operating system, software, data, and hardware.

  • Technical skills to develop, implement and test disaster recovery functions using backup technologies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of AWS cloud architecture and the function of key services supporting database workloads (EC2, RDS, S3, VPC, CloudWatch, CloudTrail, IAM, KMS, etc.)

  • Knowledge of key elements of cloud/AWS architecture and their function.

The University of California, Office of the President, is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range shows the growth potential for this position and the pay scale is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.
