GENERAL SUMMARY: Under direct supervision, provides care, maintenance, assembly and operation of all cardiopulmonary bypass systems, all cardiac and pulmonary assist devices, all electronic physiological pressure monitoring equipment and pacemakers in the operating room, intra-aortic balloon pumping systems, all autologous blood salvage systems, and other related systems. During cardiopulmonary bypass, the perfusionist is responsible for monitoring blood gases, and the adequate anticoagulation of the patient, may administer blood products, anesthetic agents, and medications to the patients. In addition to these critical responsibilities in the clinical setting, the perfusionist also evaluates and selects new equipment, orders supplies, compiles research and clinical data.
