Description

The Senior Subject Matter Expert (Sr. SME) - Advanced Manufacturing and Technology Engineer is a technical leader responsible for driving advanced manufacturing capabilities across Barnes Aerospace operations. This role provides expert guidance on automation, robotics, digital manufacturing, and process optimization to support new product introduction, operational excellence, and continuous improvement across global sites. The Sr. SME partners closely with Engineering, Operations, Quality, and Supply Chain to ensure manufacturing processes meet safety, quality, delivery, and cost objectives while complying with aerospace standards and customer requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership



  • Serve as a recognized technical authority in advanced manufacturing, automation, and repair technologies.
  • Establish standard manufacturing practices and technical roadmaps aligned with Barnes Aerospace engineering and operational goals.
  • Support capital planning, equipment selection, and implementation of automation and digital manufacturing solutions.
  • Work across global manufacturing sites to deploy best practices and ensure consistency.
  • Provide technical mentorship to manufacturing engineers, technologists, and technicians.



Manufacturing Engineering & Process Excellence



  • Lead NPI, DFM, and industrialization activities to ensure robust, repeatable manufacturing processes.
  • Drive process optimization using new to Barnes technologies, Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and data-driven problem-solving methods.
  • Perform and review process capability studies and risk mitigation plans.
  • Advanced knowledge of CNC programming, traditional machining processes, and aero-engine materials/alloys.


Automation & Robotics



  • Lead design, integration, and deployment of automated and robotic manufacturing systems.
  • Support programming, simulation, and validation of robotic cells, PLCs, sensors, and vision systems.
  • Identify opportunities to improve safety, quality, and productivity through automation.


Quality, Compliance & Safety



  • Ensure manufacturing processes comply with customer specifications and internal quality standards.
  • Partner with Quality and EHS teams to support audits, corrective actions while promoting a strong safety culture in all manufacturing transformation efforts.


Qualifications



  • Minimum 7 years of experience in manufacturing engineering or advanced manufacturing within regulated industries (aerospace preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience with automation, robotics, and process design, optimization and implementation in a production environment.
  • Experience supporting multi-site or global manufacturing operations.
  • Expected travel 50% or more


Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Materials or Industrial Engineering (or related discipline).

Qualifications
Experience
7 years: Manufacturing engineering or advanced manufacturing within regulated industries (aerospace preferred) (required)
