Job Description:

AMA seeking a Materials Engineering Intern to support one of the following summer research projects.
  • Investigate the structure of the carbon matrix and the carbon/fiber interface using microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Additionally, the internship may also involve mechanical testing of C/C and characterization of the pre-cursor materials used to manufacture C/C.
  • Analyze data previously collected in testing to determine the conditions when a material undergoes oxidation.
This position is located at NASA Langley Research Center at Hampton, VA. In addition to completing the application on our website (www.ama-inc.com/careers) candidates selected for an interview will be required to provide 2 or more references.

Pay Range: $ 24.33 - $27.90, depending on education.

This internship will be 10 weeks, starting June 1, 2026. Responsibilities:
  • Prepare a report documenting the progress made during the internship.
  • Present research to group at the end of the internship.
Requirements:
  • Must be pursuing a degree in chemistry, physics, materials science, chemical engineering, or related field.
  • Highly motivated and willing to rapidly learn and apply new laboratory techniques.
  • The internship may also involve a significant amount of literature searching.
  • Ability to function in a multidisciplinary team and inclination for out-of-the box thinking are musts.
  • Experience with data collection and processing specific to ceramics will be an asset in developing robust characterization methods.
  • Preferred - computer programming experience, preferably in the language R
Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident due to facility requirements.
