We're seeking a future team member for the role of Vice President, Release Train Engineer to join our HR Technology Systems. This role is in Pittsburgh, PA Role Summary: The Release Train Engineer (RTE) serves as the servant leader and delivery orchestrator for one or more Agile Release Trains (ARTs) within the People Team. This role enables predictable, compliant, and high-quality delivery of HR technology and process capabilities that support employee experiences, talent programs, core HR systems, and People analytics. The RTE drives cadence, transparency, cross-team coordination, and continuous improvement across the ARTs, partnering with Product Management, Engineering, People Operations, Compliance, and other enterprise stakeholders. Roles and Responsibilities
- Orchestrate ART delivery
- Lead PI Planning, System Demos, Inspect & Adapt, and ART ceremonies; maintain ART calendars and milestones.
- Establish and run consistent release calendars across multiple teams; manage scope, dependencies, and risk to ensure on-time commitments.
- Planning and governance
- Facilitate quarterly planning, feature prioritization, and capacity alignment across teams and platforms.
- Ensure traceability from business objectives to features and stories; maintain delivery roadmaps and release notes.
- Dependency, risk, and compliance management
- Identify, surface, and resolve cross-team dependencies; escalate impediments with clear action plans.
- Embed controls and compliance (e.g., data privacy, access, HR process controls) into delivery workflows; partner with control functions where needed.
- Metrics, insights, and execution health
- Define and publish ART health metrics (predictability, velocity, flow efficiency, defect escape rate, lead/cycle times).
- Drive variance analysis and recovery plans; enable data-driven decisions and continuous improvement.
- Stakeholder engagement and communication
- Maintain transparent communications to Product Owners, Business Stakeholders, HR Operations, and Technology leadership.
- Facilitate alignment across People Team initiatives and enterprise platforms (e.g., identity, data, integrations).
- Continuous improvement and coaching
- Coach Scrum Masters and teams on Agile/SAFe practices; evolve ways of working and tooling usage.
- Run improvement experiments and retrospectives; institutionalize best practices and playbooks.
- Tooling and delivery operations
- Ensure effective use of Jira/TPro (TargetProcess) or equivalent tools for planning, tracking, and reporting.
- Maintain high-quality ART boards, dashboards, and release artifacts; drive standardization and hygiene.
- Financials and capacity
- Partner with Product and Finance on capacity allocation, estimates, and budget awareness; improve forecast accuracy.
- Vendor and platform coordination
- Coordinate deliverables with third-party vendors and internal shared services; ensure integration readiness and cutover plans.
- Integration and release readiness
- Run go/no-go forums; confirm readiness (testing, controls, documentation, training, communications) and coordinate releases/cutovers.
Key outcomes and success measures
- ART predictability within agreed thresholds (e.g., PI predictability 80%+).
- On-time delivery of committed features with reduced escaped defects and rework.
- Improved flow metrics (lower WIP, shorter cycle times) and reduced critical impediments.
- Stakeholder satisfaction and alignment with People Team objectives.
- Demonstrable continuous improvement (retrospective actions delivered and sustained).
Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in technology delivery, program management, or Agile leadership; 3+ years leading complex Agile programs/ARTs.
- Strong background in HR technology or People Operations platforms (e.g., HRIS/Workday, case management/HRSD, talent/learning systems, integrations, reporting/analytics).
- Proficiency with Agile/SAFe frameworks; SAFe RTE, SPC, or equivalent certification preferred.
- Hands-on experience with enterprise delivery tooling (Jira, TargetProcess/TPro, Confluence), and familiarity with CI/CD and release management practices.
- Competent in dependency management, risk/issue mitigation, and stakeholder communication at scale.
- Understanding of data privacy, access controls, and regulatory considerations relevant to HR data.
- Excellent facilitation, negotiation, and coaching skills; comfortable leading large planning events and multi-team ceremonies.
