As an entry-level Customer Support Chemist within PPG's Substrate Protection Services team, you will support automotive OEM customers. You will combine hands-on analytical lab work with customer-facing technical support, focusing on testing, troubleshooting, and improving pretreatment and electrocoat products. Ideal for candidates looking to build experience in analytical chemistry, instrumentation, and the automotive coatings industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform analytical and quality control testing on products and materials using established methods

  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation (e.g., GC, HPLC, titrators)

  • Analyze and interpret data; generate reports and communicate findings to internal teams and customers

  • Support technical troubleshooting and root cause investigations for product performance issues

  • Maintain accurate documentation in lab systems and ensure compliance with quality standards

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with R&D, manufacturing, and technical service teams

  • Follow all laboratory safety, regulatory, and quality procedures

  • Assist with method development, continuous improvement, and lab operations

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field

  • 0-2 years of lab or analytical experience (including internships or academic research)

  • Basic knowledge of analytical instrumentation and laboratory techniques

  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving, and data analysis skills

  • Effective communication and ability to work both independently and in a team

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office; ability to learn lab systems (LIMS)

Preferred

  • Experience in automotive, coatings, or chemical industry

  • Familiarity with ASTM methods and industry standards

  • Experience with statistical/data analysis tools (e.g., Minitab, JMP)

  • Knowledge of regulatory standards (EPA, OSHA, ISO)

  • Customer-facing or technical support experience
