Job Summary
Midland Asphalt Materials Inc., a subsidiary of Barrett Industries Corporation, delivers advanced pavement preservation solutions to customers across New York. We are seeking a QA/QC Technician 1 for our Tonawanda office. This position is responsible for collecting, measuring, and testing materials for construction projects including asphalt binder, emulsions, asphalt mix, aggregates, and soils/sub-base. This position determines compliance with standards and procedures. This position also performs testing for research for formulations, product evaluation, product development, and process control. The starting pay for this position is $21 per hour, with expected hours being 40 hours per week.
Safety Essential Functions
- Participate actively in company safety programs, including safety huddles, safety observations, and reporting of near misses.
- Foster the safety culture by making good/safe decisions.
- Always wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Follow all safety policies and procedures, including Motor Vehicle Policy, Drug & Alcohol Policy, etc.
Main Responsibilities
- Work with ethical judgment, understanding the importance of ethical practices in conducting experiments and handling data.
- Ensure testing is done according to procedure, specification and with calibrated equipment.
- Attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in QA & QC tests, certifications, experiments, measurements, and recording data.
- Keep the lab and its documentation organized.
- Keep a clean work environment.
- Complete shared cleaning and organizing tasks daily.
- Accurately and safely perform sampling, testing, and analysis of materials, including asphalt, emulsions, and aggregates.
- Operate, maintain, calibrate, and clean laboratory testing equipment.
- Record test results on standardized forms.
- Use a computer and software for email communication, data entry, reports, and other activities.
- Travel to job sites as needed for support, observation, to gather samples and provide a written report of the visit.
- Meet deadlines and ensure the smooth operation of laboratory processes.
- Stay focused and work consistently towards goals with minimal supervision.
- Switch tasks as needed to accommodate dynamic needs of the QA/QC group.
- Ensure an open line of communication between colleagues, Supervisor, Quality Control Manager, and manufacturing personnel.
- Communicate effectively, verbal and written, to share ideas and feedback clearly.
- Participate in the start of shift huddle to outline upcoming tasks that will be shared equally with coworkers.
- Build and maintain professional relationships with colleagues in manufacturing, sales, etc.
- Work as a team across all functional groups and with the best interest of the company in mind.
- Accept tasks and instruction from Supervisor, QMS Manager, higher level technicians and QA/QC Manager.
Qualifications & Requirements
- GED or high school diploma.
- Possess and maintain a valid driver's license with a good driving record.
- Degree in a related field or previous laboratory testing experience preferred.
- Possess or be able to obtain OSHA 10 and National Emulsion Technician Certification within 2 years of hire.
- Set hours depending on location and season. 8-hour shift generally within 6am-6pm. Requires flexibility in work start and end times and length to meet demands. Overtime and weekend work may be required, but infrequent.
- Frequently required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
- Able to use fine motor skills and hand/eye coordination often.
- Work is required to be done wearing appropriate PPE to protect while sampling, testing and to protect from exposure to elements, dust, fumes, loud noise, and materials (chemicals, petroleum products, etc.).
- Out-of-town travel, requiring overnights for field work, training, other lab and company visits and conferences expected up to 5% of the time.
