Position Announcement

Utah Tech University seeks a detail-oriented, highly collaborative, and collegial Assistant Director for Higher Education for Incarcerated Youth (HEIY). This position serves as a key internal operations manager and liaison between Utah Tech University and partnering youth correctional facilities, supporting the implementation and day-to-day coordination of postsecondary educational programming.

Working under the leadership and guidance of the HEIY Director, this role manages and implements program operations, instructional and scheduling coordination, and student support systems across 10-15 juvenile justice sites. The Assistant Director will aid and work to establish consistent procedures, support instructional staff, and expand incarcerated youth access to high-quality academics, university resources, and education opportunities.

The Assistant Director will optimally instruct at least two General Education courses per academic year, as well as manage virtual and asynchronous instruction across the program. This is a one-year contract, with the option to renew for an additional year, depending on legislative funding.


Responsibilities

  • Support implementation of HEIY programming across correctional facilities through communication, coordination, and alignment with university policies, facility requirements, and regulations.
  • Develop, document, and maintain standardized procedures for enrollment, course delivery, student tracking, scheduling, and multi-site program logistics.
  • Coordinate instructional logistics across sites and ensure consistent, compliant program operations.

  • Facilitate online, asynchronous coursework for HEIY students, ensuring access, engagement, and academic progress.
  • Support faculty and instructional staff through coordination of materials, classroom logistics, and maintenance of access to Canvas and learning resources.
  • Coordinate and facilitate live virtual instruction (Zoom, Monday-Thursday) in partnership with faculty and correctional facility staff.
  • Serve as liaison between faculty, students, and facilities, ensuring clear communication of expectations, schedules, and instructional needs.
  • Troubleshoot instructional technologies and user interface issues within university-supported systems, including Canvas and secure LMS environments.
  • Collaborate with the Director to enhance student support services, retention, reentry pathways, and address barriers to student engagement.
  • Assist with recruitment, hiring, onboarding, training, and supervision of instructional staff and HEIY program assistants.
  • Ensure consistency in instructional expectations and program delivery, and provide ongoing support to instructors in correctional settings.
  • Assist the Director in coordinating partnerships, aligning program operations, tracking data and outcomes, maintaining records, supporting reporting, and contributing to continuous improvement and program sustainability.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in one or more disciplines that qualify the candidate to teach multiple General Education courses at the college level required. Doctoral degree (PhD, MFA, or other terminal degree) preferred.
  • Success in coordinating partnerships, large initiatives, and academic, non-profit, or business programs. Experience working with justice-involved populations or in correctional education programs preferred.
  • Demonstrated skills in coordinating partnerships and collaborating effectively with educational institutions, government facilities, volunteer partners, and cross-agency stakeholders. Experience teaching in higher education and familiarity with student learning management, student information systems (Banner), and digital learning platforms, or the ability to learn these quickly preferred.
  • Strong organizational and operational skills, including experience developing procedures, documentation, and workflows, with exceptional attention to detail and ability to coordinate complex initiatives. Experience with hiring processes, staff training, and supervision preferred.

Supplemental Information

POSITION DETAILS, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:Full-time overtime-exempt staff position.This is a one-year contract, with the option to renew for an additional year, depending on legislative funding. Annual salary of $54,000-$57,000 depending on qualifications and experience. Desired start date of June 2026.
