Environmental Science Associates (ESA) is a 100% employee-owned environmental consulting firm. We plan, design, permit, mitigate, and restore for projects across our communities, infrastructure systems, open spaces, and wildlands. We are 50 years strong in 21 offices across California, the Pacific Northwest, and the Southeastern United States.

ESA is seeking an experienced Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) Manager to join our firm as a strategic leader, providing operational guidance and technical expertise in SHE management. The Firmwide Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) Manager is responsible for advancing a proactive and positive safety culture across the organization. The Firmwide SHE Manager ensures regulatory compliance, drives continuous improvement of SHE programs, and serves as a trusted advisor influencing safe behaviors and riskreduction decisions at all organizational levels. The selected candidate can be based out of Los Angeles, CA, Santa Barbara, CA, and/or San Diego, CA, and be able to work a hybrid schedule of being on-site a few days per week.

Who You Are



  • An experienced Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) Manager with a minimum of 7 years of experience in supporting a comprehensive, operations-focused, company-wide SHE Program.
  • Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or a related scientific or technical field. Additional years of experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Professional safety certification (e.g., CSP, CIH, CHST, ASP) is a must.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to influence and engage diverse audiences.
  • Experiencein the Architecture, Engineering, Consulting (AEC) industry supporting SHE in the collection of scientific or monitoring data in a variety of environments including remote, urban, overwater, industrial and construction sites.
  • You foster an inclusive team environment where all employee-owners are valued, respected, and are enabled to work at their highest level.


What You Will Do for ESA

Program Management



  • Support the development, delivery, and continuous improvement of SHE training programs and initiatives, tailored to both inperson and remote workforce environments.
  • Support and strengthen the organization's SHE Reward and Recognition Program to reinforce safe behaviors and elevate exemplary SHE performance.
  • Collaborate crossfunctionally to streamline SHE processes and improve reporting, documentation, and operational consistency across teams.


Communication & Engagement



  • Prepare and deliver highquality presentations, reports, and briefings for internal stakeholders.
  • Effectively engage remote employees and field teams, ensuring consistent SHE communication pathways and equitable participation in initiatives.


Leadership & Culture Development



  • Serve as a trusted advisor who effectively influences safety culture with field personnel, project leadership, and senior executives.
  • Lead and facilitate learning meetings following incidents or near misses, ensuring that key lessons are documented, communicated, and integrated into work practices.
  • Partner with employee-owners at all levels to show visible leadership engagement, encourage participation in the SHE program, actively recognize and reward safe behaviors


Compliance & Technical Expertise



  • Maintain expertlevel working knowledge of U.S. federal, state, and local SHE regulations and industry standards.
  • Conduct comprehensive project site audits to identify hazards, evaluate controls, and ensure compliance; document findings and partner with field teams to drive corrective actions.
  • Support development, implementation, and maintenance of SHE policies, programs, and procedures to ensure alignment with regulatory requirements and organizational objectives.

ESA has established multiple pay ranges tailored to the economic factors in the geographies in which ESA staff reside. For this position, the range is approximately as listed based on our anticipated hiring locations as noted in the above job details. Actual compensation is determined by several factors including but not limited to an individual's related experience, education, skills, and the city in which the applicant lives.
