Job Summary

The Facilities Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for maintaining the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) Nancy Foster Environmental Complex in Key West. Manages the repair and ensures the routine upkeep is carried out in an efficient and timely manner.

  • Maintains grounds and facilities at the three-building Nancy Foster Environmental Complex (includes administrative office building, visitor center, and maintenance/storage building, yard and boat dock).
  • Coordinates and assists with maintenance of mechanical systems, including HVAC, plumbing and electrical.
  • Serves as the technical point of contact for vendors. Monitors and evaluates technical performance of contracted vendors. Maintains vendor relationships and solicits new vendors as appropriate.
  • Conduct routine safety checks and report potential hazards to ensure OSHA and NOAA regulations compliance.
  • Maintains and monitors Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) security system and cameras.
  • Reviews maintenance operations and the work of on-site maintenance personnel, as necessary.
  • Assist with purchasing cleaning and maintenance supplies and help monitor expenses to stay within budget
  • Maintains inventory and upkeep of all tools and equipment; record inventory and parts into OP&M and Center database.
  • Assists in drafting statements of work and government cost estimates for facility contracts.
  • Assists with general mechanical maintenance of FKNMS vessels/vehicles.
  • May provide supplemental support for basic IT tasks as they arise.
  • Provides technical support for visitor center exhibits.
  • Performs essential duties in any emergencies such as hurricanes, storms, and/or any other university emergency closing. The employee is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification of a department administrator.
  • Safeguards all assigned property (computer, smart phone, tools, etc.) and reports any missing immediately.
  • Accepts deliveries and moves materials within the facility using a forklift or other material handling equipment.
  • As skills and interest allow, may support on-water vessel operations in compliance with the NOAA Small Boat Program.


Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and two (2) years of relevant experience; OR an equivalent combination of relevant education, experience, and/or vocational/technical training. Valid Florida Driver's License - Class E



Desired Qualifications
  • Facilities and maintenance experience.
  • Knowledge of basic plumbing, HVAC, mechanical and electrical systems; familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS) and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) is a plus.
  • Ability to analyze mechanical problems and design solutions.
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing plumbing issues and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to assist in drafting requests for proposals when outside vendors need to be called in for major repairs.
  • Working knowledge of disaster preparation, recovery procedures and shutdown procedures for IT equipment.
