Job Summary:

Perform a variety of duties to ensure the security of Institute staff, buildings and grounds; respond to emergency situations as necessary; coordinate security for special situations, such as theft investigation; execute programs assigned by Security Manager.


What You'll Do

Full Time Schedule (Friday-Tuesday 4pm-12am) 5 days per week (will include weekends)

Essential Duties:

Main purpose of job (List primary duties that occupy a majority of incumbent time in order of importance.)

  • Patrol Institute buildings and grounds on foot or in automobile; inspect buildings and grounds to detect possible safety and security problems; report problems and unusual occurrences to appropriate authorities; ensure automobiles parked at the Institute are in compliance with state and county codes (e.g., not blocking emergency lanes); maintain log of daily activities
  • Provide assistance to RTI staff and visitors, unlocking doors, jump-starting vehicles, answering questions, etc.
  • Detect infractions of Institute rules and regulations and take appropriate actions; request assistance of local law enforcement officers as necessary
  • Respond to equipment and building alarms, hazardous chemical and hazardous waste incidents at the First Responder awareness level (OSHA 1910.120), emergency medical situations according to established procedures; determine the need for, and request, outside assistance if appropriate; administer emergency care within the scope of individual training
  • Monitor departmental vehicles for mechanical problems; report problems to appropriate authorities
  • Investigate reported incidents and prepare Incident Reports
  • Act as trainer on Security topics to other security officers; assist in training conducted by third parties
  • Conduct special investigations, e.g., theft of RTI/client property, as assigned by Security Manager
  • Assist in coordination of response to special situations, such as hurricanes, bomb threats, etc.
  • Assist technical staff with projects requiring unique security considerations, e.g., 24 hour surveillance of materials

Job Requirements are a combination of qualifications and related experience. Judgment of an acceptable equivalent combination, on an individual basis, is the responsibility of Management.

Minimum Required Education & Experience

High School Diploma and 3 years' security, monitoring or other related experience with lead experience preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience

Certifications:

  • CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) Certification
  • AED (Automated External Defibrillator) Certification

  • Full knowledge of policies and procedures related to RTI security
  • Full knowledge of policies and procedures concerning CBI (Confidential Business Information), DoD and other industrial security plans
  • Full knowledge of FCC rules concerning radio transmission
  • Full knowledge of fire safety procedures
  • Full knowledge of local, state and federal regulations as they relate to RTI business activities
  • Skill in using all security, safety and medical equipment carried on RTI security vehicles, including fire extinguishers, first aid kits, AED (Automated External Defibrillator), jumper cables, portable radios, etc.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply verbal and written guidelines, including Institute and departmental policies and procedures, RTI Emergency Plan, Safety Manual and Security Directives
  • Ability to write clear, accurate, legible and comprehensive Incident Reports
  • Ability to effectively communicate with RTI staff, clients and the general public
  • Ability to reason and make judgments quickly in emergency situations
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with supervisor, co-workers and other RTI staff
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License
  • Security clearance; no felony charges
  • CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)/AED (Automated External Defibrillator) certification; annual re-certification is required
  • Individual must be able to work in adverse and difficult emergency medical situations, which may involve exposure to human blood and other body fluids

Physical/Mental Demands

Physical and mental demands of this role include those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job, as outlined above. Examples include: remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time; operating a computer and other office machinery; thinking, learning, and concentrating effectively and frequently communicating with other people, both within RTI and outside of RTI; frequently moving about inside and travel between offices and laboratories; frequently conducting laboratory site inspections (if applicable), ability to handle the stress associated in meeting frequent, multiple and tight deadlines, ability to work in excess of 40 hours per week as workload and deadlines may require, consistent demonstration of mental stability and ability to have regular, reliable and predictable attendance. Employee may be required to lift equipment up to 50 pounds. Employee must be able to do a lot of walking and/or running as well as stand on their feet for many hours at a time.
