The Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute (HHRI) has a new opportunity for a Laboratory Services Supervisor to support the pre-clinical research being conducted at HCMC, a level one trauma center and safety net hospital located in downtown Minneapolis, MN.

This is a 100% on site position.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position will serve as a liaison between research staff, administration, and internal/external vendors to ensure the safe and smooth operation of HHRI's basic research laboratories, including equipment, laboratory instrumentation, and related facility issues. The Supervisor will have working knowledge of and supports and enables laboratory functions, compliance and safety standards, participate in and coordinate Operations and Compliance committee meetings, and perform a variety of administrative functions.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:



  • Acts as a liaison between research staff, administration, and internal/external vendors to ensure the safe and smooth operation of HHRI's clinical and pre-clinical research laboratories.

    • Ensures needs are communicated appropriately, and in a timely manner
    • Liaison with HHS radiation safety officer
    • Ensures adherence to lab standards and practices to maximize safety and operational effectiveness. Manages various laboratory inventories, manages and maintains supplies, lab ware, instruments, and equipment.
    • Primary focus is on common areas and common resources, however, ad hoc novice/administrative support for individual laboratories regarding equipment and materials may be requested and is expected when necessary for safety and institutional compliance concerns.


  • Serves as a resource for laboratory personnel

    • Provide training and guidance for the use of shared and common equipment (i.e. Autoclave, freezer, etc)
    • Provide guidance and contact information and procedures for shared institutional lab related vendors


  • Ensure compliance, safety standards, and institutional policies are followed.

    • Coordinates annual safety re-training for research staff
    • Coordinates annual Allergen survey for lab personnel
    • Monitors adherence to established safety policies
    • Ensures laboratory and facility compliance with federal guidelines
    • Maintains safety manuals
    • Maintains Laboratory safety inventories
    • Maintains chemical inventory
    • Maintains equipment inventories
    • Maintains freezer inventories
    • Ensures appropriate documentation is updated/maintained on a continual basis
    • Arranges for annual hood recertification


  • Participates in and coordinates various Operations and compliance committee meetings

    • Serves on various compliance committees
    • Plans agendas and take minutes
    • Coordinates and disseminates information.
    • Coordinates lab staff and volunteers for back-up coverage and special functions (i.e., Radiation Safety, etc.)
    • Performs a variety of administrative functions.
    • Assists in managing laboratory budget
    • Coordinates lab and/or office vacating process

      • Performs final walk-through
      • Disposal/disbursement of equipment, chemicals, furniture


    • Ensure proper functioning and as necessary arranges for repair of all lab equipment, instrumentation, and facility services
    • Ensures smooth functioning of facility daily workflow




EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

Education/Experience:

Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. Typical qualifications would be a baccalaureate degree, and two (2) years related experience, or a total of seven (7) years related experience to include 3-5 years' experience with basic laboratory functions, Biosafety issues, and chemical hazards.

Skill, Knowledge & Ability (SKA):

Basic knowledge of laboratory procedures, standard equipment functions, operating parameters, and maintenance requirements. Requires interaction with a diverse population. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with Biosafety issues and chemical hazards. Must possess strong interpersonal communication skills. Ability to take the initiative, prioritize, organize, and coordinate a variety of functions. Displays high standards of attendance, punctuality, maintains confidentiality, and manages time effectively.
