GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

This position will move between buildings as needed. Candidates must be able to travel between campuses.
Under the general direction of the School Nurse or Principal, the Clinic Assistant provides a safe, clean, and peaceful environment for students who are hurt, sick, or in distress. Delivers first aid for injury or sudden illness and cares for the student until the parent or guardian can be reached and/or medical care obtained. This position assists the school nurse in carrying out a School Health Services Program designed to promote, maintain, and improve the health of students within Federal, State, and Cape Coral Charter School guidelines.
Background Screening Requirement: Florida law requires all school personnel to undergo a Level 2 background screening through the Florida Department of Education's Background Screening Clearinghouse. SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Since every duty associated with this position may not be described herein, employees may be required to perform duties not specifically spelled out but may be considered incidental in the performance of this job.
- Provides both physical and emotional support, depending on the needs of the student. Administers first aid and basic life support responses to ill or injured students according to the American Red Cross and/or procedures in the Clinic Assistant's Handbook, including providing CPR, choking assistance, and bleeding control in emergency situations.
- Assists in the administration of medication to students in accordance with Florida Statutes and Cape Coral Charter School guidelines.
- Assists students with health and hygiene matters as necessary to allow for appropriate participation in the classroom.
- Maintains appropriate charts and records and assists in filing health records. Performs clerical duties in the clinic.
- Conducts health screening procedures as directed by the school nurse, such as vision, height, weight, dental, pediculosis, and scoliosis screening.
- Monitors students with minor health problems, seizures, and blood glucose numbers for diabetics.
- Observes and reports any unusual physical or behavioral conditions of a student to the school nurse, guidance counselor, and/or school superintendent.
- Responsible for notifying parents/guardians of ill or injured students and retrieving students from their classroom if they are going home.
- May be assigned to provide back-up assistance in other areas such as Basic or ESE after appropriate training.
- Participates in in-service training regarding clinical management, care of students with medical needs, medical emergencies, medication administration, respiratory, and toileting management.
- Maintains a safe, clean, and peaceful environment in the clinic, including sanitizing, labeling, and organizing.
- Performs other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Alternatives to the minimum qualifications can be made by the Board as they find appropriate and acceptable. Education:
- Technical degree from an accredited college or university in nursing or a related field.
Experience:
- Two (2) years of related work experience in the medical field, school nursing, or working with children.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Current certifications in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid must be maintained.
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Registered Nurse

- Demonstrated aptitude for working with ill/injured students.
- Ability to recognize and react appropriately in emergency situations.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure due to nurse/student ratios.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, support staff, and others.
- Ability to uphold the ethical codes and standards of both nursing and education professions.
- Ability to make decisions related to student needs in a variety of educational settings.
- Ability to work independently with limited direct supervision.
- Ability to utilize a variety of modern office equipment, i.e., computers, facsimile machines, and copiers.
- Ability to issue and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information received and processed.
- Ability to perform duties with consistent courtesy and tact in the best interest of the public.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
