Basic Function
The Trucking Manager oversees all Bernhardt Transportation driver operations, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant execution of daily transportation activities. This role plans and schedules outbound loads for company trucks, secures delivery appointments, coordinates backhauls, and ensures all delivery timelines are met. The Trucking Manager directs and supports the driving staff, enforces company and regulatory policies, and provides ongoing safety training, coaching, and accident-prevention initiatives.
Organizational Relationships
Reports directly to the Program Manager. Works closely with internal departments-including Traffic, Sales, Accounting, Human Resources, and Industrial Relations-as well as regulatory agencies to ensure full compliance with DOT, FMCSA, and all local, state, and federal transportation laws.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
  • Supervise daily activities of the Local Driver Dispatcher, Backhaul Coordinator, and Dispatch Office Clerks.
  • Assign loads and trips to drivers while ensuring compliance with Hours of Service, DOT, and FMCSA regulations.
  • Monitor dispatch operations and escalate issues to the Program Manager as needed.
  • Ensure accuracy and compliance of driver trip records, logs, and pay documentation.
  • Identify and recommend cost-saving opportunities related to driver operations and fleet efficiency.
Safety & Compliance
  • Promote a strong safety culture through regular coaching, counseling, and refresher training.
  • Conduct timely investigations of accidents or incidents in accordance with company policy.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of transportation regulations, industry standards, and operational best practices.
  • Personnel Management
  • Maintain close communication with the Fleet Administrator, Load Coordinator, Expedite Specialist, and dispatch personnel to resolve operational challenges.
  • Participate in hiring decisions for driving positions in collaboration with Human Resources, the Program Manager, and the Director of Transportation.
  • Assist in selecting candidates for salaried roles such as Local Dispatcher.
  • Ensure fair and consistent treatment of all employees under supervision.
  • General Duties
  • Support the Program Manager with special projects and cross-departmental initiatives.
  • Provide assistance to corporate personnel as needed.
  • Ensure the Dispatch Office remains current with relevant tools, technology, and operational methods.
  • Authority
    The Trucking Manager is authorized to take reasonable actions necessary to maintain effective supervision of the driving staff, Local Dispatch, and Dispatch Office Clerks. All actions must align with Bernhardt policies and fall within the limits established by the Program Manager and/or Director of Transportation.
    This role holds responsibility for interviewing, hiring, training, and, when necessary, dismissing employees within the department.
