Overview:

We are seeking a Superconducting Linac (SCL) Systems Group Leader for the Accelerator Systems Section in the Research Accelerator Division (RAD) at Oak Ridge National Lab. The Research Accelerator Division's mission is to safely and reliably operate the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) Accelerator and to execute impactful Accelerator R&D focused on SNS improvements and strategic opportunities, all in support of delivering neutrons for impactful scientific discovery.

The SNS linear accelerator (Linac) consists of a combination of room temperature and superconducting structures and is the first accelerator that uses superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) technology for a pulsed proton machine. The SNS Linac produces 1.3-GeV, 2-MW negative hydrogen beam (1.3 GeV, 2.8 MW capable after the Proton Power Upgrade) and is now considered to be the world's leading high-power proton accelerator facility.

The SCL Systems Group is responsible for the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation, maintenance, system engineering, and continuous improvement of cryomodules and cryogenic systems supporting the SNS superconducting linear accelerator, including the Central Helium Liquefier (CHL) and cryogenic distribution systems. The group also leads the design, construction, commissioning, and operation of SRF and cryogenic test facilities, supports the Cryogenic Moderator System (CMS) for neutron production, and provides cryogenic engineering expertise for existing and future SNS systems, along with focused R&D in SRF and advanced laser technologies.

The Technical Group Leader drives technical excellence and global leadership within the group by developing staff, advancing capabilities, and supporting career growth. Working closely with the Section Head, this role implements the group's technical vision, addresses complex engineering challenges, and ensures high standards for performance aligned with Environment, Safety, Security, Health, and Quality (ESH&Q) requirements. The role also fosters a diverse and inclusive work environment where employees feel valued, supported, and empowered to contribute at a high level.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage all activities of the SCL Systems Group, including operations, maintenance, and continuous improvement of cryomodules and cryogenic systems supporting SNS.
  • Direct and integrate efforts for the operation, maintenance, and enhancement of the Central Helium Liquefier (CHL)and associated cryogenic infrastructure.
  • Provide cryogenic engineering support for Cryogenic Moderator System (CMS) and other SNS, ORNL, and DOE initiatives
  • Oversee design, construction, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and upgrades of cryogenic and SRF test facilities (including CTF).
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop staff to support safe, reliable 24/7 operations and enable technical excellence and career growth.
  • Lead and manage group R&D programs
  • Drive continuous improvement by investigating off-normal events, implementing corrective actions, and ensuring system reliability.
  • Ensure effective planning and execution of budgets, configuration management, maintenance programs, training, staffing, and required technical documentation.
  • Represent the group to division leadership, DOE, review bodies, and professional organizations, and ensure active participation in management and operations forums.
  • Lead by example by exercising the principles in ORNL's "Research Code of Conduct" as a guide for proposing, performing, and communicating research.
  • Coach and mentor staff regarding Battelle's "Safe Conduct of Research" principles.
  • Deliver ORNL's mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote equal opportunity by fostering a respectful workplace - in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.
