Under general supervision, Maintenance Specialists (MS) perform a variety of operations, maintenance, repair, inspection, and construction tasks in connection with operating and maintaining facilities and properties associated with East Bay Municipal Utility District's (EBMUD's) raw water storage and transmission systems; water and wastewater treatment systems; chemical treatment systems; and related facilities and properties across the Central Valley to the East Bay.
The list generated from this recruitment will be used to fill any Maintenance Specialist II (MSII) vacancy that may occur in the Aqueduct Section's Stockton, Bixler, or Walnut Creek service yards during the next 12-24 months. There are two (2) current vacancies in the Walnut Creek area, which will be filled at the MSII level.
EBMUD provides paid training and opportunities to gain experience in higher skilled areas. Once individuals have gained experience and demonstrated proficiency, they advance to the Maintenance Specialist III (journey level) classification. Promotional advancement usually takes about two years. MS-IIs must advance to MS-III within two and a half years of hire. Currently, the top MSIII salary is $135,480836 annually.
Maintenance Specialist II is the sub-journey level classification in the series and works under general supervision. Individuals perform semi-skilled work and receive training and experience in skilled work. This classification is distinguished from the Maintenance Specialist I classification in that the Maintenance Specialist II is required to have previous experience and knowledge of fundamental mechanical, electrical, and civil theory. MSIIs will participate in EBMUD's Trades Training Program for Maintenance Specialists and learn to perform complex maintenance duties.
Maintenance Specialist III is the journey level classification in this series and works under general supervision. Individuals perform skilled work in a variety of trades. This class is distinguished from supervisor classifications in that supervisors are responsible for planning, directing, and assisting in the work performed by Maintenance Specialists and other workers.
Typical MSII duties at the Aqueduct facilities fall into the general disciplines of:
*Operating, maintaining, repairing, and installing pipelines and appurtenances such as valves, taps, connections, fittings, flow meters, and gauges.
*Operating, maintaining, repairing, and installing electrical equipment such as motors, control systems, wiring, conduit, and lighting.
*Operating, maintaining, and repairing industrial facilities and equipment such as large and small pumps, plumbing, valves, hydraulic, and water treatment systems.
*Maintenance, repair, and new construction of building components such as concrete structures, vaults, hatches, and ladders.
*Performing land maintenance work such as road and drainage maintenance, weed abatement, herbicide application, etc.
*Operating commercial vehicles and equipment such as backhoes, service truck cranes, motor graders, compact excavators, tractors, and trailers.
The ideal candidate will have an unrestricted Class A California driver's license and experience in the construction and building trades, large diameter pipeline construction and maintenance, pumping plant and facility operations and maintenance, and heavy equipment operation. However, candidates with exceptional skills in other trades can also be successful and will receive Class A training, if needed.
The Maintenance Specialist II monthly salary range is $8,412 per month, increasing to $8,833, $9,275, and $9,739 after 12, 24, and 36 months, respectively.

3.Possession of a valid California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record. Must possess a valid, unrestricted Class A driver's license within 12 months of appointment (EBMUD pays for training). Incumbents are subject to federally mandated random drug testing as a condition of maintaining employment.
4.Possession of or ability to obtain, within 12 months of appointment, a T2 Water Treatment Operator Certificate and/or a Wastewater Operator-in-Training Certificate, issued by the State Water Resources Control Board (Bixler only).
5.Possession of or ability to obtain, within 12 months of appointment, a Category C Qualified Applicators Certificate (QAC) for Rights-of-Way pest control from the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (CDPR) (EBMUD pays for training).
6.Possession of or ability to obtain, within 12 months of appointment, a valid Service Truck Crane Operator certification (STC) from an accredited certifying entity such as the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO).
Other Requirements
*Ability to respond and be on-site within one hour of the reporting location if on standby assignment and working as a MSIII.
*Must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the class.
*Willing and able to work in a variety of weather conditions; work weekends, holidays, and on any shift, on call or overtime as needed.
*May be required to be clean shaven on a scheduled basis to test or to wear respiratory protection equipment.
*Willing and able to complete home study, on-the-job training, and pass written examinations required to advance to MSIII. Must advance to MSIII within 30 months of appointment.

2.Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test part in order to advance to the next step in the selection process.
3.All qualified applicants will be invited to attend a written exam consisting of approximately 200 multiple choice questions related to technical subjects that are relevant to the skills and knowledge of the Maintenance Specialist classification. The written exam is currently scheduled for Saturday, May 30, 2026 at the EBMUD Administrative building in Oakland.
4.Top performing candidates on the written exam will advance and be invited to a practical exam (hands-on assessment) to demonstrate skills and knowledge in the same subjects. The practical exam will be held during a weekday at the Bixler Service Yard (Brentwood). The practical exam is currently scheduled for the week of June 22, 2026.
5.Applicants with the highest combined scores on the written test (weighted 30%) and practical exam (weighted 70%) will be placed on the hiring list, based on rank, for further consideration to fill the immediate regular vacancy, as well as others occurring over the next 12 to 24 months.
6.The probation period for this position is 12 months. For those holding civil service status the probation period is 6 months.
