The Position
-
East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) has three (3) openings and invites candidates who have the appropriate qualifications to apply for these intern positions (part-time, approximately 19 hours per week when school is in session, or full time on school breaks) in the following areas:
*Environmental Compliance of the Regulatory Compliance Division
*Mechanical and Instrumentation Engineering of the Design Division
*Pipeline Design Support Section of the Pipeline Infrastructure Division
The Engineering Aide will assist professional engineering and technical personnel by performing the following typical tasks:
All Engineering Aides:
*Using PCs for preparing reports, memos, graphics, and databases. Established experience with Microsoft software suite is required. Experience with AutoCAD, Visio, or SketchUp is desirable, but not required for all positions.
*Presenting project findings and results (technical and non-technical) to management and other EBMUD staff.
*Assisting with meeting coordination, including scheduling, preparing meeting agendas and presentation materials, and recording meeting minutes.
*Assisting with tracking project budgets.
Environmental Compliance Engineering Aide:
*Support the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) inventory program with research on issues such as renewables technology, carbon credit utilization, calculation methods, annual reporting, etc.
*Support analytical review of contaminated trench soils and remediation project sites to assess for regulatory compliance. Assist with investigation requests from staff, assess risk using environmental databases, draft handling instructions for use by staff. Support regulatory agency communications.
*Support environmental permit compliance inspections, data analysis and reporting for air, water, wastewater, waste, etc.
*Support Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program compliance by reviewing guidelines, making recommendation for improvements, auditing data and documentation for accuracy and completeness
Mechanical and Instrumentation Engineering Aide:
*Assist staff mechanical engineers in the design and development of mechanical and process equipment used to produce and distribute clean drinking water.
*Prepare engineering calculations and technical reports.
*Attend various hands-on training activities alongside with staff mechanical engineers.
*Work alongside staff mechanical engineers on active construction jobsites helping build lasting water infrastructure and solve mechanical engineering problems.
Pipeline Design Support Engineering Aide:
*Conducting field and office engineering studies related to the planning, design, and construction of water distribution pipelines, and corrosion control systems.
*Analyzing pipeline and corrosion control performance, maintenance, and construction data, utilizing statistical analyses to summarize the data.
*Preparing engineering drawings and specifications for distribution pipelines and corrosion control systems.
*Inspecting pipeline construction and corrosion control materials for conformity with plans and specifications, keeping records from which essential data is compiled, and inspecting existing water storage and transmission facilities and preparing a condition assessment report for improvements.

Requirements
-
1. Completion of the twelfth grade, or its equivalent; and,
2a. Current enrollment in an undergraduate level accredited engineering or related technical degree program, with completion of at least 60 semester units (90 quarter units); OR
2b. Current enrollment in a graduate level accredited engineering or related technical degree program; OR,
2c. Recent completion (within 12 months) of an undergraduate or graduate level accredited engineering or related technical degree program.
Must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the class. Must be willing to work outdoors in a variety of climatic and geographic conditions. Must be willing to work overtime as needed.
Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.
The ideal candidate will have:
*An excellent command of spoken and written English to assist with technical reports, meeting notes, and project correspondence.
*Strong organizational skills, with the ability to assist in managing project schedules, budgets, and tasks.
*The ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment while demonstrating attention to detail, accuracy, and adherence to project specifications.
*Teamwork experience, with the ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, designers, and trades people.
*General computer skills including MS Outlook, MS Excel, MS Word, MS Project, MS PowerPoint and Adobe/Bluebeam.
*Understanding of project management principles, engineering economics, and/or statistics.
*Experience with computer programming, CAD and/or GIS.
If applying for Environmental Compliance Engineering Aide:
*Upper division course work in any of the following areas - Environmental Science; Environmental Regulation/Policy/Planning; Environmental Management; Environmental Engineering; Sustainability and/or related technical areas.
*Experience with reviewing and interpreting large complex data sets and use of various software tools focused on data analytics.
*Experience with reviewing protocols and/or regulations and summarizing key requirements and making recommendations.
*Experience with outreach and education to various audiences on environmental concepts to support internal training programs
If applying for Mechanical and Instrumentation Engineering Aide:
*Understanding mechanical engineering knowledge to design mechanical and process systems.
*Ability to draft sketches by hand and CAD.
*Experience working on complex projects with a multi-specialization engineering team.
If applying for Pipeline Design Support Engineering Aide:
*Understanding of engineering economics and statistics.
*Experience with data analysis tools (e.g., Python, MATLAB, SQL, or similar), is a plus.
*Ability to develop and conduct technical studies related to water system design, construction, and/or maintenance is a plus.
*Knowledge of pipeline design, construction, maintenance and corrosion control is a plus.
