Unit secretaries play a vital role in the healthcare industry because they support a wide range of individuals, including patients and other medical professionals. The Nursing Unit Secretary performs clerical, receptionist, and transporter duties. The ideal candidate for this role will possessstrong customer service skills, effective communication skills, and have the ability to multi-task.

About the Unit

Bean 5/IMC/AVU is a high-paced 34-bed medical intermediate care unit. Patient population is vast and includes specialties of acute on chronic states, respiratory failure, complex vascular, general surgical and neuroscience conditions, sepsis and multisystem organ failure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the first-person patients and families encounter on the unit, providing a warm, friendly, and professional welcome
  • Answer and triage phone calls in a high-volume environment
  • Respond to call bells and communicate needs promptly to the care team
  • Unlock and monitor secured unit doors
  • Check visitors in and out, ensuring unit safety and compliance
  • Greet and assist families, patients, and visitors throughout their stay
  • Support unit operations through clerical and administrative tasks
  • Assist with patient transport as needed
  • Think quickly on your feet while managing multiple priorities


Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  1. Education: High School diploma or GED preferred.
  2. License/Certifications: Current BLS certification preferred or may be required based on location.
  3. Experience: Three years of secretarial experience with at least one year within MaineHealth required. Demonstrates competency in all essential functions of a Nursing Unit Secretary I role.

The pay range for this position is $19.48to $23.14 per hour.

Compensation for part-time positions isdeterminedon a prorated basis consistent with the scheduled hours and applicable full-time equivalent (FTE).
