Job Summary

This position is responsible for the performance of technical work related to material acquisition, serials control and cataloging for the College Library. It reports to the Director of Library.

Essential Job Functions
-
- Orders books (electronic and print), DVDs, streaming videos, and other collection materials for the library; notifies faculty when requested items have been added; tracks and updates orders; receives/unpacks/downloads materials assuring materials match orders; updates budget ledger; cross references deliveries/orders with invoices; reconciles with credit card orders or refers for payment.
- Prepares received materials for circulation, adds and edits information in bibliographic and item records, prints call number labels for books and DVDs, adds property stamps to materials, attaches card pockets and book jackets, and adds security strips and checkpoints with reference stickers if needed.
- Selects new books for displays and maintains and updates those records accordingly.
- Maintains and updates list of standing orders.
- Generates acquisitions and cataloging reports from Polaris integrated library system or Simply Reports and maintains collection statistics. Communicates with vendors about orders, discounts, and invoices and troubleshoots related problems.
- May perform shelf list maintenance.
- Serves weekly shifts at the circulation desk and perform circulation duties as needed.
- Assists with public and technical services special projects, such as weeding and inventory.

Minimum Requirements to Perform Work

- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least one year of related experience.
- Experience with an integrated library system.
- Knowledge of Adobe, Excel, Outlook, Teams, Word, and One Drive.
- Experience in acquisitions/technical services.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Available to occasionally open the library (7: 30 AM) and work evenings and weekends.
Preferred:
- Familiarity with Library of Congress Classification System.
- Polaris (integrated library system).
- Acquisitions/technical services experience in an academic library setting.

SALARY INFORMATION: This full-time position will be placed on the College 12-month employee Non-Exempt Staff salary scale at grade 5. Actual salary placement based on qualifications and experience. Position includes an excellent fringe benefits package.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is normally light work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
- Hear/talk/communicate – Must be able to exchange information and communicate
- Visual Acuity - Ability to perceive or detect surroundings
- Mental Acuity – Able to focus, concentrate, understand, and convey subject matter
- Repetitive motion (i.e., keyboarding)
- Stand/sit/walk/able to move or traverse from one area to another
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
College library on-site. College campus, direct contact with students, staff, faculty and the general public in classrooms, common and shared areas, offices, and campus environments. Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as library, office, meeting, and training rooms. Use of safe workplace practices with office equipment; computers for data entry and word processing with some highly technical applications and new technology systems; avoidance of trips and falls; observance of fire, workplace and building safety regulations and all College policies. Observance of traffic laws when/if driving College vehicles.
TO QUALIFY FOR EMPLOYMENT, SELECTED CANDIDATES MUST:
- successfully complete a criminal background check (for designated positions)
- be able to work on campus as of the first day of employment
- Residency restrictions apply. The College does not hire solely online instructors living outside of Maryland. Carroll employees may live in other states, but they must physically work in Maryland the majority of the time. For income tax obligations, employees must be a resident of DC, VA, WV, MD, or PA on the date employment commences. In addition, candidates must be willing to come to campus for identity verification within 3 business days of hire date.
